    Kelly-----

You are correct as to the installation of the "special washer". This washer, GM #3868762, was a "phenomenon" of 1968-70 Corvette heater box installations. It was not used before or after. It was NEVER available in SERVICE.

In lieu of these washers, I'd recommend using the special seal developed by Dr. Rebuild. I think that this seal will perform the function of the "special washers" plus a lot more. No judge will ever be the wiser, either.

      Re: 68-69 heater box

Hi, I know what you are talking about. It has been a while since I was in that area of my car though. As I recall, the special washer really wasn't a washer. Basicly, I recall it being small and rectangular in shape and very thin. Sort of made out of that thin spring steel stuff that J-nuts are made out of. They had a hole in the center that was punched so that the metal would grip the stud it was sliding over it. I believe its function was to hold the inside heater box to the fire wall after it was in place but before the outside box was attached. There were about 4 of them. They were so thin that they didn't get in the way of things. After that, I believe they just use a type of body culking to seal the outer heater box to the fire wall. An assembly manual would identify the sealant. I have also seen lots of tar type sealant poured around the edge of the outer heater box. Not too pretty. But, I have seen it on too many cars not to be original. I think those WASHERS can be found on passenger cars too. That is were I think I finally figured out what they were, when I was pulling a heater box out of an old chev. I couldn't figure out why the box wouldn't move. Under the culking, I found the retainers. Hope this helps, Terry

In the plants, we called those "zip-nuts"; just retainers to hold the inner box in place until the outer box was installed - like the larger ones used to hold brake drums in place before the wheels were installed.

If you look around, you might be able to find some in a hardware store or maybe on the internet with some fastener outfit. I thought the same thing about the washer bit based on the description. Good luck and let us know if you find some. Best regards, Terry

terry they are available , i use these all the time in the body shop , mostly for hanging bumpers, and such , just wasnt able to tell from description in manual, any good bodyshop will have them in the washer bin, they are still used on new cars but are probably metric.

Kelly, I think what the "special nut", you are referring too, is technically a TINNERMAN NUT. I had lunch today with Henry Tinnerman and his grandfather invented this nut. It is sometimes called a speed nut. Needless to say Henry doesn't have to worry about paying for his next meal.
