    TRAILER GVR EXPLANATION

    While trying to correctly configure my trailer hitch I was advised by the trailer co that the gvr of the new trailer I am purchasing was 7000 lbs. It is a 24 foot car hauling trailer was ordered and is fact named a race trailer and they know i was going to haul cars. If the trailer weight is 3880 lbs and my corvette car weight is 3207 lbs., all of this totals over 7000 lbs. isn't this cutting it too close?, and why would a car hauling trailer co sell a trailer that just barely meets the criteria to haul a small car only. What am I missing here? have I got my weights confused.

      Don: I purchased a Featherlite model 4961, which is a 20ft enclosed car trailer, although it is 23ft inside dimension. Mine is rated at 7000lbs. It is the 3500lb axles (double tandem) that give the GVWR. My '71 LS6 coupe weighs 3340lbs with maybe 2 gals of fuel in it. Trailer weighs 3300lbs, so I'm close as well. I believe Featherlite 24ft trailers were equiped with 4800lb axles. Check those ratings on your rig.

          Most reputable trailer manufacturers will offer optional axles such as the 4,800# axles. I prefer to err in the direction of "over" engineering such things as trailers. It ain't no fun in the middle of the night to try to get a wheel bearing. Besides, the larger axles usually have a brake upgrade such as a wider shoe and or larger diameter.

          Do Not try to run the "trailer special" tires that come on them. They are usually good for about a year and then start to weather crack real bad. I had real good experience with a LT tire with rated capacity to at least equal, preferably to exceed expected GVW.

          I started pulling race car trailers in the mid '60's and can tell you about anything that can go wrong. Been there, done that.

          Just don't skimp on tires, axles, and brakes. It will bite you some time or another.

              new info--trailer weight 3880 lbs-- vette weight 3246 lbs --total is 7126 lbs. This is the info the dealer (and maybe the trailer co) knew (they knew I was hauling a 2003 vette)They supplied 7000 gvw trailer. Going to cancel deal and drop $2000 deposit. Trailer was illegal on hiway right off the bat. Are they incompatants or scammers or just sharpies , or is my assessment wrong?
