    69 sound insulation

insulation on the firewall has been ordered a C.C for 8 mths and still not in , the question is - is the insulation for the firewall correct , the pieces i mean - the stiff tar or rubber backed stuff around the heater box and below the wiper plenum. the other question was i see snake oyl puts out some insulation for the area behind the seating area over the wheel wells and such it is advertised as heavy , tar paper backed is this correct or factory or was thew factory just the woven roven particulate on the back of the rug. any answers?>

    Re: 69 sound insulation

I recall seeing two types of reproduction. One being better than the other. Both had the same masticated rubber backing (which I believe you lay facing up). The differance was in the padding part. Originally, the padding was sort of this camel hair stuff (as I recall) or horse hair like backing. I have seen it reproduced so it is out there. The other kind that I see is made with a different type of padding and I can't totally recall what it looked like. I believe it was more like synthetic matting? Regards, Terry

Good luck with your project. The sound deadener will be a mostly greyish cotton batting, with flecks of red, blue, green.......throughout. The padding is about 1/2" thick, and backed with a black rubberized layer. The padded side gets glued to the floorpan (use 3M spray carpet adhesive), the carpet gets glued to the black rubberized backing.

There are two sets of deadener for the firewall. The upper is plain 1/2" thick padding, similar to that used under the carpet, but without the backing. This gets glued in place. The lower sections are greenish padding, with a thick, black "tarpaperlike" backing, which is quite brittle. The color of the padding may not be exactly like original--let someone else chime in here. The lower sections are attached with special rubber "buttons". Good luck finding any lower sections that fit without modification, especially in the area of the steering column. Also, good luck with your dealings with C.C.

I bought all these items 3 years ago from Doc Rebuild. I heard rumors a while back, that there was a delay in producing the firewall insulation, but that might be over now. Why not call Doc Rebuild to check availability (I am not certain, but I THINK that they are the manufacturers of the stuff).

The first paragraph of my previous response to you, is about the area behind the seats. This will cover the wheelhouses, the floorpan, and the rear bulkhead.

The original stuff was jute padding not that gray stuff with the threads hanging out of it. YOu can still get the jute padding stuff. Just call around and you will find it. I would try Zips or Corvette Central. Talk to the tech people, they will usually know. Paragon reproductions also sells it but they are historically high priced but I usually don't have problems with them. Regardo's Terry
