Copy Orders common in dash of early C3s?

Really just a point of curiosity. After many years I FINALLY opened up the left dash as I had to get in and fix something - Since I don't have the original gas tank - I was a bit curious to see if I'd also find a rolled up Copy Order like many have reported when opening it up.

Sadly, no, just lots of pristine undisturbed dust - there was nothing to indicate the dash had ever previously been disturbed but who knows - Anyway looking between the two main gauges and elsewhere w/ the left dash hanging forward - no sign of a Copy Order.

But I am curious. Just 'how' common is it to find sheets tucked up in here? A minority of early C3s? Half? Very common? Anybody have a gut feel?

    thanks,

Don't know if it's too common, but I found my Corvette Order Copy in between the left dash and the steering column, where they meet each other, folded in four, as I explained a couple of times. I remember others commenting about finding the copy in the radio area too.

I presume virtually all had it on the tanks - but as far as how many were found behind the instruments/above steering...? It might be a number that would be hard to quantify is my guess?

I thought about the radio (and also under the carpet) like you mentioned - both have definately been worked on or accessed or replaced before so not a real likelihood in my case.

      thanks!

I located mine in the same location Roberto located his.If I remember correctly Robertos v.i.n and mine are not that far off[1970].I am curious if the location in wich an order copy was placed was mandated or just up to whoever was on the line that day,If this is the case then the same guy most likely put them there.

I worked in the auto assembly plants and their were many copies of the build sheet for each car and the ones that are found were left by the workers. The same person did probably leave them in the same spot as all workers used them so they installed the correct part if their was an option on their job. Worker installing the radio checked to see if it got one,was standard,or stereo as an example. Lyle

From the numerous cars that we have had apart, I think that it probably an exception, rather than a rule to find a sheet in the car

When I owned a 70 LT-1 I found one between steering column and dash.

                  I can testify.....

The sporadic build sheet 'stuffer' was active as late as April, 1971....

Well, you see gentlemen, there was a guy, the Phantom of the Build Sheet, visiting a lot of cars to hide copies for the future.

But a great moment finding it, It was!!

Well he must have taken a day off or at least a long coffee brake sometime in May of '71

So is it fair to describe this phenomena as 'Sporadic' at best? Less than 50% perhaps?

That copy was provided for the cluster subassembler, so he would select the correct cluster assembly for that particular car, and it went to the main line installation operation with the panel so it could be verified as the correct assembly by the installer; the guy who installed it in the car was supposed to pull it, verify that the panel was the correct one for the car on the line, and pitch the sheet in the trash can before installing the panel. However, after finding out that the subassembler always sent him the right panel (nobody in a white shirt came running up the line hollering at him for installing the wrong panel), leaving the paper stuffed in place where it couldn't be seen anyway just eliminated one more element of his operation and "lightened the load"; production guys are like that
