    HD Brakes ID

Have two wheel setup for HD Brakes, with some oddities that I hope someone can advise on.......or simply guess:

    1) 1/8" mesh wire on the backing plates; apparently 60-2 fronts.

    2) 1 1/8" wheel cylinders, cast 5453822 and 821; 822 cylinder has an inset 14 cast into it - is this a julian date? B&H bolts retain the cylinders.

    3) Brake pivot pins do NOT appear eccentric, but do have a squared should on the rear.

    4) Primary shoe return spring, yellow in color, .91" diameter, 4.61" overall length. Seems too big in diameter, but they ARE HD.

    5) Secondary shoe return sping, "violet" in color, .91" diameter, 4.92" overall length.

    6) Lower shoe spring, medium blue, .47" diameter; 3.67" long

    7) 2 1/2" wide primary shoe, bonded metallic lining in 3 sections, each section 3.67" long (measuring end to end with a micrometer, not laying a tape on the surface).

2 1/2" wide secondary shoe, bonded metallic lining in 2 sections, each 3.67" long.
These belong to another fellow and before I put them on the market for him, I want to be as sure as I can of what is here. Thanks.

Thanks Verle, but I wouldn't want you to buy

something that you couldn't use. Where are all the brake experts anyway?

        Loren;

Didn't Dale do an article about something like this in The Restorer many years ago. The only thing I can remember for sure is a picture captioned "Research assistant Sadie". The picture was of his hound dog. I also seem to recall something about yellow springs in the article. Sorry I can't be more help.

Ed, I think that article was about 686 brakes,

the metallic linings without the finned drums - but I'll check it out; that may be the source of the linings. Thanks.

Re: Ed, I think that article was about 686 brakes,

I am storing an UNrestored 62 (and have been for 2yrs now!!!) in my garage for a little ole lady (seriously) and it was/is a metallic brake car (NOT HD). As best I can determine it has had one brake job in its lifetime. The drums appear to have been turned once and the original metllic shoes have been replaced with std shoes. BUT, the pull back springs for metallic shoes are still on the car. They are the LARGE diameter variety. I forget which is which (I'd have to go out and look), but they are yellow and pink. The drums are std drums with 2in shoes on the front. The coil springs around the drums are the flat wire variety rather than the round wire.

Tom, I took another look between the crud

spots on the pullback spring and what I called "violet" could very well be pink - is this what came with 686 pieces - or is it a replacement setup of springs that came across the counter in late 60's/70's??
