    tripower carb 67

I just got a new set of tripower carbs back from the rebuilder and noticed that the center carb seems to rock when seated on the manifold. I would say it rocks about 1mm. Is this ok? The end carbs seem to sit better. The carbs were bought used and have not been on my car previously. Should I be concerned about air leaks or throttle plates binding when I tighten the carb down? Thanks, Tom

    Tom,

As an owner of a tri-power 67, I feel more than knowledgeable on this subject. It is hard enough to get them to run with a flat base plate. I cannot imagine how hard it will be to get it to idle correctly with a warped base plate. You will need to correct this situation before pulling your hair out by the roots. Send the carb back to the rebuilder with a note explaining your problem and ask them to fix the carb correctly. If they refuse or cannot perform this repair, you should refuse to pay or cancel your credit card payment to that vendor.

Tom - Joe Ray is right, no way can you live with this. Someone like Jerry luck surfaces the baseplates in a lathe to insure they are dead flat. This is critical and the rebuilder should never have returned them in this condition...Craig

Straight-edge the carb base plate and the intake manifold, although as JR indicates, its probably the carb base plate that's warped. A couple of thick carb to intake gaskets would probably temporarily cure a 1 mm distortion and allow you to fire the engine up.On a piece of glass or plexiglass all located on a firm work bench, take the base plate and rotate it for several minutes on the 600 grit paper. turn base plate over and observe the high and low areas.you may be able to sand the distortion out yourself on the glass-backed 600 paper. Local machine shops can also handle fixing the distortion. mike

Also don't ignore the obvious, such as a buildup of leftover gasket material on the manifold or a burr on one of the stude that would hang up the carb.
