I have now obtained the 1958 I was inquiring about. It has a good title and the title number's match the VIN stamped in the frame (Thanks Ed Jennings) but it has no VIN tag on the door post. I have heard you can apply for a new one from GM. Any truth to this?? If so how do I go about doing this?? If not are there any other alternatives for getting a tag?? Thanks Larry

The last I checked....
with a Chevy dealer about the replacement VIN program (about 3-years ago), they contacted the Chevrolet Zone Dealer and were told the program (factory VIN replacement) had been discontinued.
At NCRS there is NO PENALTY for a car being shown with a State issued replacement VIN tag. Our rules only require that each car have a VALID tag in place and each State can/does issue replacement VIN ID tags for the purpose you have.
Now, on other factory concours circuits (e.g. NCCB/Bloomington, Chevy/Vettefest) there may be some scoring penalty for a non-original VIN tag. But, that's their problem....
You other alternative is to commission a 'reproduction' VIN tag, but that has potentially serious drawbacks.... If it's determined during judging that the car is wearing a 'fake' VIN tag, you loose BIG TIME at NCRS and the act casts doubt on the authenticity of the car in general.
My recommendation is to play it safe. Go through the process that's fully 'street legal' and have your State issue a replacement VIN identification tag....- Top
