There isn't total consensus on this issue, but my notes indicate that the driveshaft was painted (and stenciled) at Buffalo, then was covered to varying degrees during the pre-body drop chassis blackout operation; that's how I did my '57.

Mike,

As John said there has been much discussion and disagreement about this question.

My unrestored 57 driveshaft has some black paint under the dirt although I have not removed all the dirt to check the whole thing.
