Re: Does Anybody Know....
Don------
Your requirement for use of the stock fuel line and choke (and, presumably, the stock intake manifold) pretty much limits your choices to another Holley. The requirement for the stock fuel line, limits your choices to a model 4160 Holley as is your list 3810. I don't like model 4160 Holleys, at all.
Is your problem with the particular carb or Holley list number that you have or is it with Holleys, in general? In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

I don't like Holleys, and....
neither does any knowlegeable professional I know. I should know- I ran a Holley 6V intake on my driver for over 10 years. They are a particular problem for collector cars, as some of the passages are formed by the float bowl gaskets. When the car sits, the carb dries out, and the gaskets shrink and deform. As I have often said, "Holleys are easy to work on- because they need to be". Give me a WCFB, or AFB any day. Or, I hate to say it here, the Autolite 4100, which was probably the best 4V carb ever made.- Top

Re: holley still lists a new 3810 in their 03 cata
Clem, I think Holley is the most uncooperative, disorganized, and user unfriendly car part corporation on this planet. Well, except for American Racing Equipment. And maybe Delco/Delphi/Doofus. But I digress...
The 3810 has been dropped from production best I can tell. I gave up on Holley tech support and tried to bulk order some through a local Holley distributor. No soap. The only mid-year assembly line Holley 4-barrel still made is the 3367. The best price I've seen is about $420 including shipping from Jeg's. This carburetor is a '66 design, but it is a direct replacement for a 3810.- Top

the old cork gaskets shrink but they have not been
used for more that 15 years. only the cheap rebuild kits still have cork gaskets. if a older holley is rebuild correctly there should be no problem.if they charge you less than $ 200 to just rebuild the carb they are not doing a complete job and replating and recoloring should ad to that price. just cleaning and changing gaskets is not a rebuild.- Top

Re: Does Anybody Know....
Joe, My problem is with the 3810 carb in particular and Holleys in general. Although I've only had a 3810, I'm always hearing horror stories re: Holleys. My carb won't idle and is running extremely rich (no backfre, though) Now the plugs are fouled. My other Vettes were both Q-Jets, but I never had any trouble with them and my '57 Chevy was an AFB, the best by far.I am an originality junkie but, what good is originality if I can't drive the car? Also, why buy another new Holley only to have the same problems down the road?- Top

Your main body is warped
The carburetor main body casting, I mean. Many folks can fix this for you. And yes, this problem will probably re-occur until Holley improves the metallurgy of their castings. That will be about never.
I'm assuming that your 3810 was running properly at one time, and that no one has since improved it using tips from "Car Craft" magazine.- Top

Re: Does Anybody Know....
I have a Jerry Luck rebuilt/restored original 3810 on my '67, and it's both a piece of visual artwork and is functionally flawless; who knows how many sets of "rebuild" hands have been on old Holleys, and what kind of parts they used. I also have a Jerry MacNeish rebuilt/restored original 4053 on my '69 Z/28 (see photo) which is an appearance and functional equivalent to the Luck 3810; if they haven't been butchered by previous owners "improving" them and are done by the right guys with the knowledge and the right processes and parts, they'll give good service - at least that's been my experience.

Re: Does Anybody Know....
John, Thanks for the reply. So,J.Luck does good work. I've never heard the first bad word about him. What does he charge and how long to turnaround?
Actually, the 20 year old carb is like brand new (no rain, you know) and all I may need is a rebuild-the right way, of course. I don't want to tie up the car for a month as we are just coming into our "car show and cruise season" here in Fla.- Top

Re: Does Anybody Know....
Don:
A Jerry Luck rebuild is around $425. I had mine done by him (I recommend him he is good) but I am still having vapor lock problems on my stock 67 L79. If I was to do it all over again I would have bought new 66 holley and shelved the old original one. Remember the 67 has internal float adjs, the 66 has external sight adjustments. As for now, I have the nice looking j.luck rebuild on the car but it still leaks gas after it sits for 1/2 hour. Gas is boiling out. I have filled up with a 94 octane gas and adjusted the timing to run cooler. I still need to double check if the heat riser is open and if it is , I will need to possibly plug the heat passage under the drivers side intake. I might try a insulated spacer also.- Top

Jerry Luck: (314) 895-1551. Jerry is always very busy (for obvious reasons) and his turnaround may not suit your needs, but check with him anyway.
Jerry MacNeish: (410) 781-0418, www.z28camaro.com
There are others out there as well who do excellent work on Holleys, but these are the only two I have personal experience with.- Top

Re: Does Anybody Know....
Daren, It's problems like yours that soured me on Holleys. I know J.L. does good work, but,as you state, I can buy a new '66 #3367 carb (for less $) that will work on my '67. A new Holley 3810 is $698! Tomorrow I'm going to the local speed emporium to try and match up an Edelbrock AFB and hopefully hold to a minimum any hack job I'll need to do to use it. Question: How many Holley carbs were ever made? Answer: 3 million. How many Holley rebuild kits were ever made? Answer: 20 million!- Top
