    I'da sold them for $1....

When I was in the Navy coming home on leave, sometime during the night coming up I95 the inboard bowl gasket on the rear carb failed and started spewing fuel down the power valve manifold vent hole, the engine became a V6 from fouling, fuel consumption went to about 5mpg. Got the watch at an Army Reserve base to open the Auto Hobby Shop, spent a couple hours trying to figure it out, try that at 0700 in a 40 deg shop when you've been on the road all night after working 0500-1600 duty the day before. I finally drove a 1/8" rivet into the vent hole and hit the road.

      Re: Funny thing...

if you do not know what to look for when you rebuild a holley you will have trouble. the metering bodies and the main body where the mate get warped from overtightening the bowl screws and so do the float bowls themselves. the same with the throttle bodies. the main body and the throttle body can be machined but the metering body must be straighten in a fixture using a press. if the bowls are warped the trash can is the only answer and buy new ones. you must check all these surfaces and correct the problem or you will never have the carb operate correctly. the big problen nowdays is not the always carb but the heat from the heat riser crossover causing this new forulated gasoline to boil in the carb and it becomes worse when you have a aluminum intake manifold which transfers the heat to the carb.

Don, I have an Edelbrock 1406 600 cfm on my 327/350 that works real well.

        FYI -

          For what it's worth...

I checked them for true with a plate glass from time to time. After a while the bowl screws would be finger loose. Keeping 6 idle screws matched was a pain, too. Got to where I could do the whole recond job in just over an hour. Since the total cfm of this setup was more than the engine could possibly use, I changed to 4V. The 6V sure looks great on the workbench! I have it displayed right next to an 8V setup for the same engine.

I've got a Edelbrock 1406 on my 327-300. That's after putting a rebuilt Holley on that didn't run right, sent it back for another rebuild and it didn't do any better. It's on a shelf. The Edelbrock worked good out of the box.

              Steve:

Since you have an Edelbrock the same as mine, I have a couple questions for you if you don't mind.

Did you use the vacuum port at the center back of the carb for your Master Brake cylinder (if you have power brakes), and did you go with the electric choke mechanism?

If you did use the electric choke, what did do use for the hot wire feed for the choke?

              Thanks,

              Rich

Richard, thanks for the helpful info re: Edelbrock carb. I'll investigate it. Tell me, can/did you use the original air cleaner, vac. advance line, fuel line, PCV port locations?? Sorry to bother you with a lot of detailed questions. Hey, guys, are we going for a thread length record here?

                  Re: Does Anybody Know....

                  Hey Don,

The carb came on the engine when I bought it last year.

It was on top of a high rise aluminum manifold, and I needed to get a lower profile air cleaner base.

PCV is from driver side valve cover to carb. I have a breather cap on the other valve cover, and none to the air cleaner itself.

Car also came with a Mallory Unilite distrib. (electronic). That, works real good.

I can email you shots of the carb set up on the motor if you'd like.

                  Regards,

                  Rich

                        Don:

I'll shoot some digital shots this weekend for ya.

Also, go to Edelbrock website- http://www.edelbrock.com

You can download PDF files on the carb specs, install, etc.

Send me an email so I have your email address this weekend to get the pics to you.

                        Regards,

                          Richard,

In response to your question, send me your email address and I'll send a couple of photographs of my installation. I do have power brakes, but the vacuum connection is to a fitting on the intake manifold rather than to the carburetor. I also have an electric choke. I found a wire on the firewall that worked, and made sure not to connect to the coil.

                          Steve

                              Thanks Steve.

                              My email is rwmnc@optonline.net

                              Don needs the pics too.

My vacuum connnection is also to a single outlet from the manifold to the power brake master.

My PVC is connneted to the carb from the driver side valve cover.

I have a breather cap on the passanger side, and no connection to the aircleaner itself, like an original installation would have.
