Is the instrument cluster on an '84

interchangeable with other years of the c4? I know that '86 had an indicator in the cluster of the manual transmission cars to prompt the driver to upshift. Several of the displays are out on my '84 and I have located a good cluster from an '88 at a reasonable price and will buy it if it will work properly in my '84.

Hi Ralph, Sorry but 1984 cluster is 1984 only, no interchange. 1984 is kind of like the 1968 of the C3's.1984 Only. Hope this helps.Save the Wave.>George

As I recall, there were a number of changes made to the cluster after '84. For example, I think they changed the angle of the cluster to reduce glare. Not sure how well the elctronics would match up but I would think there would be changes there as well.

Does this mean that these are real dogs and no one wants one?

Ralph have you contacted Gordon Killebrew to see if your instrument cluster can be repaired? Gordon worked at the Corvette plant when your car was made and has a business of helping people with their C4 car problems.

Hi Ralph, The 84 Corvette is no dog, but that stigma does go with the car. I'll take that Z-51 suspension and all the little quirks that go along with the 84's I had one brand new, waited 8 months for it to come in. It was well worth the wait,it was a June 84 car and never had a problem like some of the early C4's. There was a time when the 68 Corvette was just about worthless, not anymore. The 1984 Corvette will have it's day in Corvette history just like the 1953,1963,1968,1997, and 2005. Enjoy your 84, find out all you can about it and don't forget to Wave at other Corvette owners.>George

No, Jim, I do not know Gordon Killebrew, but probably would like to if he is like others I have corresponded with through NCRS. I have considered some of the offers for instrument cluster rebuild on eBay, but have also followed the thread "Rare '70 on ebay". I have some minor bodywork (grp repair) and a repaint to do, install new carpet, and make new seatcovers before I will even license this car. So, I will have time to have the cluster done - but I sure don't wish to throw $400 or more in the sewer with somebody on eBay that gets negative feedback for returning the wrong clusters and broken ones.

Ralph to obtain more information go to google and type in Gordon Killebrew and you can read up on the man and visit his web page. Someday I would like to take my 85 up to his place and attend the courses he offers for the C4.

Ralph, I too am "restoring or rebuilding or re-doing" an 84. She was a fine driver that I picked up for my wife and then it spun a crank bearing. Decided to do the Tim Allen thing and "re-wire" it! I have taken the car completely apart except for the rear suspension. Rebuild 94 era block with one-piece seal, original auto trans, new interior (covers, carpets, foam and bladders) and readying for new paint job right now. Currently, I have the entire interior and rear harness systems strung out on my living room floor (previous owner had butchered things up here). Testing everything this weekend. I have studied the cluster issue and bought Gordan's guide on the cluster--good book for surface type problems but there is so much more complex things in this area. I suspect that the clusters had a couple of the following differences: 85 and up probably had cooling fan setup based on speed, a/c on, etc. The 84 was different to the best of my knowledge (still working on it). The panel digital characters are a little different (think 84 are very straight block type and newer are slightly slanted).

I would be glad to cooperate with you as you dig into your car. If I can be of any help please let me know--digital picture or whatever. I believe the 84's day is coming.
