I have a very good chance to buy a 66 conv. big block. I want to offer a fair price and it will most likely be mine. How do I know for sure it's a factory big block. I have the 66 judging manual and about every book made, but now it comes down to offering a fair price and being correct in what I am looking at. I can check the block casting and stamp in front, but are there any ways to be certain this car wasn't made up. Thanks in advance, I am woried about paying for something that is not real.

You could agree on a price and offer to leave the seller a "refundable" deposit, contingent on having the car "verified" as an original big block, say within 72hrs or so. If the price you have agreed upon is based on it being an original big block the seller should have no problems with the arrangement. (assuming you know someone knowledgeable enough to determine its' originality). If, however, he is not representing it as being an original big block, and pricing it as such, it gets a little more complicated. Although there are many items to look for as I'm sure all of your manuals point out, I believe there is no way to guarantee its' originality without a protecto-plate, or verifying with prior owners. Remember, all the cars were the same until they were altered at the factory to be a big block, and all these changes can easily be made by a knowledgeable owner.- Top

The best way to tell (I think) is with documentation back to the original owner.No other real way to tell.If you search the archives of this forum there is a ton of information,gas line,hood support,sway bars,tach,oil pressure gauge,rear haft shaft attachment style,I can go on but the true way to tell is with documents
Recently I was looking at a so called original b/b car.Gas line was correct and it seemed car was never off its body mounts It was late 66 and the hood support was on the drivers side but the passenger side had the hood support holes sealed up in the fender skirt.I was sure it was not a b/b car but the gas line had me wondering it was definatly a big block gas line
I ran my hand along the gas line and found a plumbing compression fitting splicing the gas line together.So I was correct in saying the car was never off the frame the just cut the line and spliced it under the battery tray.
A shared this story with a freind and he said he was detailing an b/b engine bay and removed the front fuel lines front clamp only to find a brazed joint painted silver that was hidden with the clamp.
So as you can see with the thought of adding an addtional worth to a small block car (sometimes as much as $20,000.00) there are alot of fake cars out there

You know, there are a lot of knowledgable people on here. If you say where you are, you might get an offer to go with you to look. I have a few friends from where we started out just that way. One was in Chicago years ago and said "I hear you know about Corvettes. Would you like to look at a '63 convertible with me?"
Just make sure that whoever goes isn't the type to say "Wow! What a great deal! Buy it quick!"- Top
