For a '59 Corvette, can the 4 speed shifter be removed and replaced with the tranny still in the car? Wait...there's more...it's a Muncie tranny! I just bought the car and plan to rebuild the shifter or replace it with a Hurst (can I say that here?). Thanks in advance.

Re: '59 shifter removal
Although I can not answer your exact question (muncey tranny). I have changed the shifter (stock - hurst - stock) many times in my '60 with t-10. I loosen the engine mounts and remove the t-10 to cross member mount screws. I then move the engine / tranny assembly to the right (passenger) side and can change the shifter but it is not easy. Re: '59 shifter removal
Thanks guys.
I read on another thread that it may be a problem inserting and removing the Hurst alignment rod without drilling a hole in the tunnel. Has anybody tried using a piece of 1/4" cable instead of the rod, or something with some flex? The car is on the hoist but I haven't turned a wrench yet, still trying to get a handle on any problems that may arise.- Top

Re: '59 shifter removal
Pat, I'd start turning wrenches. Seems like what I worry about the most never happens, but what I don't worry about does - BUT I never know what that's gonna be until the first time I burn myself on the trouble light - and then it falls on the floor and takes out the bulb. Best, Dennis- Top

Re: '59 shifter removal
Pat - Quite frankly, I do not believe you can remove or replace a T-10 or Muncie with the linkage in place, so most of your questions are already addressed, by default. Best of luck. DC I would, however, support the rear of the engine during this excersise...- Top
