    C2 Posi Question

I have a 1966 Corvette with an original, non-posi rear end which was recently rebuilt. I found a 1975 with a good posi rearend. Is there a simple way to swap the posi into the 66? Does this require special alignment or can a novice accomplish this task?
    Thanks

    Ronnie----

It's not clear to me if you're talking about swapping the complete differential assembly from the 1975 into the 1966 or if you're talking about just swapping the positraction unit from the 75 into the otherwise original 1966 differential assembly.

If you're talking about the former, it's quite simple. The 1966 and 1975 differential units are completely interchangeable. Simply remove the complete unit from your 1966 and install the unit from the 1975. No adjustments, alignments or anything else "tricky" is involved. Follow the diffeerntial carrier R&R procedure in your factory service manual.

If you're talking about exchanging just the positraction unit from the 75 into your existing 1966 housing, that can be done, too. It's completely interchangeable and you can thus convert a non-posi rear to a posi. However, that's not a job for a novice. I would have an experienced professional perform this work after you've removed the unit from the car.

      Addendum

One other thing that I should have mentioned. If you're talking about swapping the complete differential unit from the 1975 into the 1966, then you'll have to also exchange the pinion flange or use a conversion u-joint. All 1966 Corvettes use the "small" diameter drive shaft u-joint flange. All 1975s use the "large" diameter flange. Swapping the flanges is a little bit tricky since you have to re-establish the proper pre-load on the pinion bearing. A conversion u-joint would be the easiest. This type of u-joint has the "small" diameter for one pair of opposing trunnions and the "large" diameter for the other pair of opposing trunnions. NAPA sells these type of u-joints.

        Re: Addendum II

The U-joint is actually a F*rd unit. Number is NAPA 353.

        Hope this helps.

        Just can't say that word--hangs up. Maybe I can say F-ix O-r R-epair D-aily.
