    73 convert NCRS start

I have 73 which appears to "mostly " original and would like to enter the very basic NCRS level of judging to gain an idea as to restoration that could be started with the hope of eventually going to a Flight level. Do I just clean the car up as some have sugested. I do not want to begin restoration without the advice of NCRS judges. I have some of the Judging guides i.e.Judging Reference Manual and Tech. Info Manual and Judging guide. Yes I am a novice and a non mechanic. eventualy I will take the car to a good shop , however; I would like to have a report or suggestions for restoration for the shop to follow. I am thinking of taking the car to aregional mmet. I am nota member of a local chapter as the nearest chapter is 350 miles from my location. thanks tom number 38487

Tom, I probably would just clean the car, being careful not to destroy, remove any factory markings. I would take it to a Chapter or Regional meet and enter it into flight judging. The judges and the judging sheet would be a good reference for you to begin with. It may be, depending on the condition, a candidate for Star judging. Do not get disheartened if you do not score well the first time, although driving points do add up quickly, as everyone has to start somewhere. It is a learning process

      What Dick said...

A couple add'l observations. There really isn't a 'basic' judging level - just Flight judging (I would like to see a basic version myself). However the level of knowledge and scrutiny ostensibly is more rigorous as you go from Chapter to Regional to National within flight judging. On the other hand even if a 'basic' type of judging existed - your potential restoration may benefit as much from such a perspective as the relatively rigorous and detailed informatin that might be uncovered in flight judging at various levels. The more information that can be uncovered the better for a pre-restoration car. I don't think it would hurt to mention the plans you are considering to the judges either - it may change the context in which they provide information and insights...?

So as Dick said, clean it up real good (stay away from heavy solvents and such that might worsen surfaces or remove some markings potentially) and Chapter or above flight judging can provide you with great insights prior to deciding and planning on a restoration.

      good luck,

Tom, It sounds to me that you are headed in the right direction. Having your car judged will be the best inspection dollars you wll ever spend. If you feel the car is road worthy, drive the 350 miles to the chapter meet and take the points. As said earlier, clean it well, but be careful not to remove any oringinal surface coatings. Lastly, refer to your TM & JG as often as you can to check what you can get to. Good luck, and don't forget to come back and tell us here how you did and what you thought / learned from your experience.

          Tom,

Most all will offer you the good advice as has Dick and I agree whole heartedly. However, please try not to enhance anything if your '73 might be a canidate for Star judging. Just clean carefully so as not to destroy any original markings, finishes, oversprays, etc. Have it judged at a local or regional NCRS event as a great learning experience.

Good luck and welcome to a great family of Corvetters.
