    RESTORATION SHOP NJ/NY AREA

I am looking to get my 1961 painted some time in January. I will need some mechanical work done also. I was hoping to spend around $7,000.00 for the paint. The body is stripped and is in pretty good shape. I live in Staten Island, NY. I am close to New Jersey. Any recommnedation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Joe

      Joe,

I would consider Rons Auto Restoration in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. He has done many beautiful NCRS and Bloomington cars and is not to far from you as Fitchburg is in central Massachusetts. Besides that he is a real gentleman to deal with.

My vote would also go to Kevin, if you don't want to go to Jerry's in Florida.
So where do you live on the Island - I used to live in Sunnyside.

If I were you I would check the archives for information about some of the restores noted in this post. My $.02

If I may make a bizzarre suggestion...

Glazier's Mustang Barn, just over the river in eastern Pennsylvania, has been doing phenomenal work for over a quarter century, and I happen to know one of their first jobs was a '57 Corvette. And they recently did a whole string of Shelbys, which always need fiberglass work. In answer to the Doc, the proprietor still has his phone number in the book, anyone could call him at 2 AM. Has never happened.

Its posts like this that make me want to refrain from this Board and not renew my NCRS membership. Luckily there is only a small number in this category so we can't pay much attention to it. Enough said.

Wrong! It's exactly wht this BBS is for...

If warning other Corvette enthusiasts about predatory repair shops is out of bounds, then this board becomesd that much closer to useless. Anyone who has ever been overcharged for incompetent repair would agree. The post below which mentions Glaziers's is about the opposit. He's kinda expensive, but the work is done RIGHT. He is the guy people turn to when some "cut rate" shop has "effed up" a car. They could tell you horror stories that would curl your hair!

I agree completely. It is wonderful this type of information is posted, not hidden as one prior responder implicitly suggests. This type of information, when backed up with fact, is absolutely beneficial for all Corvette lovers (well, not exactly all as it doesn't help the the "swindler" or " incompetent" shopowner, Thank God!).

                          Dave,
I can't agree with you more. We all need a forum to exchange constructive information and I have used it myself for help along the way. A personal assualt on a restorer and fellow NCRS member with a very long list of satisfied customers indicates an isolated incident and not appropriate for this board.

Re: I Agree with you Dave

I also recommmend Ron's in Fitchburg, MA. He has helped me do 3 high scoring 99 plus point Duntov and Bloomington Gold Cars over the last 8 years. We are now doing my 4th. I would not let anyone else paint or work on my cars.

I have never had a problem with Ron and I find him to be very Honest and a complete gentlemen.

In regards to Negative coments I only have one thing to say."Their are 2 sides to every story and everyone should hear the other side before you make any judgement."

Ron has done many, many Dontov and Bloomington Gold cars over the years and has a lot of happy customers and I am proud to say that I am one of them.

                              Jeeze, six YEARS?

My observation of the shop I have mentioned elsewhere is total restoration, when performed all at once (some folks like to work in stages to give the checkbook a break) takes about six MONTHS from junk to show-winning hard-driving completion. Mind you, this is mostly on Mustangs which typically need to have a lot of rust cut out of the unibody. Not usually an issue with 'Vettes- ha-ha.

If you were payin' the bills even sporadically and hadda be called and reminded, any project which took six YEARS smells funny to me, no matter what the paperwork says. And anybody who wants a cusomer to "inspect" let alone pick up a car with inoperative brakes is just nutz.
