    Welded Block

I recently looked at a '66 350hp 327 block. It had a small weld were the deck and cam valley meet, just towards the rear of #2 cylinder. Naturally a discussion ensued as to wether this could be a factory weld. This was the first block I have ever seen with a weld, and I have a hard time accepting that it is a factory weld without something more to go on. The deck surface had been nicely machined for the weld to conform to the deck. The stamped pad area of the block was unaffected. The cam valley portion did not appear to have been worked after welding. The weld it self was of a bright material?

Has anyone any knowledge of the factory doing this type of repair on this vintage of engine?

    Re: Welded Block

To weld cast iron is a long drawn out process, not one that is usually done by a factory that can produce a new block faster and cheaper. I doubt if this is a factory weld but one by an owner trying to save the original block. I tried it but the heating process will usually warp the casting so bad it's not worht the effort.
