    Am I missing something?

It to me looks as thought there were five bidders willing to pay over $200 for this oil cap on EBay. I don't see any cylinder heads attached? That $710 NOS oil pan seems like a deal. What am I missing?

It's the old story of supply and demand and being in the right place at the right time if you are the seller. That SM on the side is the hard part. I don't know the point deduct for the SM but it looks like it is costly. Lyle

      Richard-----

Pretty much, I think that what someone is paying for is the "SM" logo next to the rivet. I think that the reproductions are otherwise correct. In any event, it's another example of extreme foolishness, especially considering that this is a USED cap. I've paid foolish prices for parts for RESEARCH purposes, but I'd NEVER pay this much, or anywhere NEAR it, for a piece like this.

What the buyers also apparently don't know is that this cap was NOT unique to Corvettes, nor was it unique, even, to big blocks. Known as GM #3856959, it was never available in SERVICE but it was used in PRODUCTION on many other Chevrolet applications during the 65-69 period. Many of these got painted Chevrolet orange over the substrate black finish. But, they can be returned to their original finish quite easily. Also, during the period and for sometime thereafter, Stant sold an identical cap, including all logos, in the aftermarket. It was either bare or chrome, but that can be easily changed to the black finish (chrome must be first CAREFULLY stripped with muriatic acid).

          Joe,

That's what I thought. I'm amazed on soooo many accounts when someone has a Chevrolet piece, states "it's off a Corvette," and the price is now tenfold.

My name is John Meissinger I sold the oil cap on ebay for 300+ dollars, I was shocked to see the price the cap brought, this cap was off a corvette, I have about 6 of them, the corvette cap is not black its a off green plating, chevrolet used many caps of that style, I have only seen this style on 1965? 1966 1967 corvettes, small blocks used a cap that is not the same, you can buy a parts store cap with a S in the rivet, you can not remove the black or orange paint and find the plating on a small block cap. I put a 125.00 reserve on this cap due to its condition (the best I have ever seen) Im selling my corvettes parts and cars at this time to try and get by, this is not a offer for any one to contact me about buying parts and please dont, Im not looking to over charge anyone, most of my auctions are no reserve, ebay is a way I can stay home with my wife who has medical problems and help with my 6 year old son. from the outside looking in it looks like alot of you guys are retired and enjoy the feed back form and time to time go on a witch hunt, keep in mind if you are over 65 you need to get up from the computer every half hour or so,(use it or loose it) JOHN Meissinger 503-939-5444

              Hey John,

Sorry about your wifes medical problems, but more power to you! when it comes to getting top dollar for your parts. I don't think anybody blames you it's the buyers that are out of controll, and that's funny. Hang in there and good luck.

Re: Am I missing something?NO NO NO

I have realized useing E-Bay I will all ways get more for a part then I could ever get from a swap meet, plus NCRS dosn't hold swap meets any more. Same with a Corvette, I have sold three Corvettes 54,55,57 at auctions in Reno NV. over the years and have got MUCH more then I could ever get from a so called Corvette person. Same with any car not just Corvettes. I sold a restored 1957 Crown Imperial Convt. at the last Hot August Auction for $64,000 when Imperial guys said I would never even get $25,000. Each Corvette and Imperial was sold to people that don't care about the right original bolt , but wont and love the car for what it is.I don't mean that Corvette people are cheep!but I would never try and sell a Corvette to a NCRS person because I don't need the stress.
