    Engine Compartment Cleanup?

I have the engine and transmission out of a '57. They have been completely restored. The engine compartment is in average unrestored condition. This car will be driven and there are no plans at this time for a body off restoration. Would it be better to leave the engine compartment as is until it could be done properly or try to clean up and paint the compartment in what would be a somewhat half-assed way? Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

    Thanks again and Best Wishes!

    Bob

if i had the engine and tranny out of my 57 long enough to have them rebuilt and i had no intentions of having it judged in the near future, i'd have that puppy back in and driving it this evening. good luck, mike

Well I'd suggest at least a good thorough cleaning w/ a mild detergent or cleaner if you haven't done that already. Perhaps something you can do in a day or so. But then I'm jaded by having tinkered on various cars that always seem to have these grungy engines - someday I'll go to do some standard maintenance project or other and actually get to work in a clean environment. I'll caution you about over-cleaning or harsh chemicals as far as any finishes or markings or what not.

I use diluted simple green sometimes but perhaps others have better suggestions.

Watch out........that's how I started, and ended up doing a complete frame-off restoration. You'll keep finding a little more to do if you're not careful...if I take this out then I can "really" clean this area, etc.

          Rob:

Thanks for the response. I could easily get out of control. It's a catch 22 for sure. If I do nothing to the engine compartment it will be a great contrast with the engine.

          Best Wishes,

          Bob

Even though you want to drive the car, how will you feel when you see your fresh engine in the tired engine bay? A few hours with Simple Green, a soft brush, and a handful of rags will do wonders for freshening up your engine compartment. Imho
