I'm talking on the phone with someone doing some transmission work for me. He is calling something the 1st. gear slider. Is this the same as a shifting fork or something totally different? It's for a '64/4spd muncie. He's telling me the slider is discontinued and to try to find an old tranny parts place. If it is a shifting fork I can get it from ZIP. The term is not familiar. Any help is appreciated.

Re: 1st Gear
Randy-----
The "slider" is the outer component of the synchronizer assembly. In this case, it must be the 1-2 syncro slider that's bad.
The "slider" has never been available from GM as a seperate piece. However, they've been available in the aftermarket for years. Mr. Gasket used to sell them and I believe that they still do. Also, complete synchro assemblies are available now as manufactured by Masiero, S.A. in Italy (Masiero is the largest manufacturer of gears in the world, so don't let anyone tell you that the Italian gears are "no good").
I'm sure that any of the 2 sources mentioned can fix you up with either a new "slider" or a new complete synchro. I wouldn't use a used slider unless there was no other alternative. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
