    1969 L89 Fuel Pump

    I have seen several references listing different AC fuel pump part #s for the early (March) 69 435 HP application. I now have 2 rebuilt fuel pumps. One is for 427 (except HD) #40659, the other is for 427 (with HD)#40482. The only visual difference I can see is the length/style of the bottom inlet tube. Any help with a diffinitive number sure will help.

    The NCRS Judging Guide says that the 40659 was used for all 1969 427 applications except L-88. GM (and myself) say that the 40659 was used only for L-36 applications and the 40482 used for L-71, L-71/L-89, and L-88 applications.

      OK. That matches many opinions. The '69 assembly manual "seems" to indicate that the L71/L89 motors used the same pump as the L36. Thank you for response!

        I don't interpret the AIM that way, at all. For the L-71 fuel pump it indicates via an asterisk that the part ASSEMBLES THE SAME AS L-36. That doesn't mean it's the same part. In fact, that terminology usually means that it's a different part but it ASSEMBLES the same way. The actual part number for the component is found on the "Bill of Materials" which is, unfortunately, not contained in the AIM.

          Thanks much Joe. Appreciate it. Question remains then.... do you assemble it according to the NCRS Judging manual, or according to what seems to be correct... Perhaps the manual needs to be changed. Small point, and just wondering before it all goes back together.

            Joe, that is a very interesting point. The L-36 was the only big block the used a fuel return line. The rest had a single line on the frame. I have a copy of the COMPLETE '68 AIM. I will do the research and see if infact that the line from the tank was also different which would possibly require a different configgeration for the inlet of the pump. I helped with this section of the JG/TM. That could explain the confusion as I live in the state of confusion (Yes Loren, you and I live in the same state)

              I have an 69 "original" L89, and an "original" L71 car. Each has a single fuel line from the tank with a small flexible portion going to the pump. Either pump would work..... both very similar. Am I nitpicking? What does NCRS say? The judging manual appears to be in conflict with experience. Thanks again. I have thought of looking at my pumps, but one is missing, and the other I can't verify as "original". Trying to purchase a rebuilt AC logo pump, I get different answers from the "experts". Appreciate it.
