    66 body prep and paint

i have a 66 roadster with paint that's lifting for a couple of reasons, the car is going to get redone, after a good deal of research and archive searching i've decided to have the car soda blasted down to the fiberglass, the body shop will then take over and rework old fiberglass repairs, cut out cracks and then prep and paint the body, i want to follow along with what they are going to do, the questions are 1 do these cars get gelcoated, this body shop is talking about a urethane primer, paint and multiple coats of clear coat,2what brands of primer and paint will give the longest quality paint job 3 the fiberglass repair-i read something about these repairs showing thru after a year or so, what kind of material and seal can be used to prevent this. i've searched the archives and gotten some mixed messages and i think technology is improving so i'm looking for some consensus from people with experience so as not to repeat my last mistake(poor prep, too much old paint, poor repair of old repairs and cracks, not enough clearcoat) etc. thanks joe

They were not gel-coated from the factory, but they do hold up better if you do. The new type gel-coats are not that difficult to sand and will do better than primers.

      Joe:

Like Wayne said, the job will hold up better with gelcoat, but not originally done. Besides, if you are having the car media blasted, the gelcoat is a good medium to resurface the body. Some shops are using marine epoxy instead of gelcoat, and some say it is even better. If you have any non GM replacement panels on the car, then they will have to be treated very differently than original panels, which were press molded with a 3 ton press. If any fiberglass repair is done PROPERLY, then it should never show through. My car is painted with Sikkens 2 stage.
      Hope this helps.
