    Chambered exhaust system

I have a 1966 Corvette coupe with stock style rear exit exhaust and was tempted to try out the chambered exhaust systems now available. I don't want to go deaf though, so wondered if anyone knew how noisy they are? I have also heard that aftermarket side exhaust pipes are louder than stock units that were originally supplied to factory.

    Comments appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Bob

    Re: Chambered exhaust system

I just got a set from a friend that took them off his 67 coupe as too loud (not)and resonated in the cabin (definitely!). I'm putting them on my 67 L79 convt.

    Hey,
    If its too loud
    You're too old

Bob, to borrow two time worn and wise sayings: "Loud Pipes Save Lives" and "If It's Too Loud, You're Too Old!" Enjoy.

I put an Allen's undercar chambered exhaust on my '68 L79 coupe. How this sound compares to a factory undercar chambered setup I can not say. It is fairly loud, but it doesn't bother me because of the rear exit. I can be cruising down the freeway with tops off and back window out and still have a conversation. To me, it has a classic musclecar sound. It does not resonate on the inside at any speed/RPM and the carpet/padding are original - no additional soundproofing. Keep in mind this is a C3, not a C2. I might be able to snag a couple sound files and email them to you - let me know.

A friend has them on a 76 and they are about half way between side pipes and standard exhaust. They definetly are a bit noisier but you can carry on a conversation while the car is idling. They do sound very good as he accelerates away. Just the right amount of music from them.

            Bob-----

Personally, regarding such exhaust systems, I would't "touch them with a 10 foot pole"----------not when I was 18 years old, not now, and, most likely, not in the future, either.

That doesn't surprise me a bit, Joe. Probably up there with '69 side gill adornment and side exhausts, eh?

As you know, I have the chambered system on my mildly modified 71. That car has been changed slightly but reversibly to suit my personal taste. I don't think the chambered system will be on it forever, but it works for now. Although it seemed loud at first I have grown to really like the sound. I purchased it through Mid America when I was at Bloomington because they give you 10% off and free shipping at major shows, which puts it ahead of the others in cost. It fit well and was easy to install. I have had it on for 2 years, and when I looked at the system last week it was still in great shape.

My 72 has a stock-type pipe-welded-to-muffler system which is about as close to factory as I could get without NOS $$$ pieces.

The two cars are very similar yet very different. Each suits a different part of my Corvette interest for now.

I'd suggest he search the Archives as the chambered exhaust question has been asked frequently.

                Joe,

What do you not like about these exhaust systems? Is it because these specific ones are not genuine GM or is it because they are louder than the other factory mufflers?

                  Roger----

For me, it's the loud and "uncivilized" sound that I dislike. Just not "Corvette-like" or befitting a Corvette, in my opinion.

I have a set of GM side pipes on my 67 big block coupe and they are loud, sound great, but you have to talk a little loud to be heard. They are wonderful, unless you are driving for about 5 hours. If you are driving for several hours, you had better start off with asprin. They are still worh it.
