will I need to adjust the shifter linkage if I change my shifter over to the short throw hole in the shifter? If it is as easy as changing the hole location , am I the last corvette owner to still have the long throw shifter in use. why would I not want the short throw?

Re: 4spd shifter short throw vs long throw
My hunch is you'll want/need to play with linkage adjust after the conversion to short throw. Guys here who are on the VR circuit (vintage race) and run with Muncie, mostly stay with std/long throw setup. Why?
Short throw does exactly what it says -- reduces the length of the pattern. BUT, there's a side effect that you only find out about once you do the deed....
In short throw mode, Muncie is MUCH more critical of side-to-side gate path. In std setup, you can pretty much 'drift' through the gates in 2nd/3rd change. In short throw, even though the travel distance is reduced, many find themselves taking longer because they have to be more precise in getting through the gate(s) and actually take longer/blow more shifts as a result. But, this is a matter of personal taste and learning.
At NCRS there's another reason for leaving in std throw mode. You automatically fail Performance Verification test because car is to be configured and checked in the condition it left the final assy point....- Top

Re: 4spd shifter short throw vs long throw
On a counterpoint, I run my car on short throw all the time, including an occasional dragrace fling where the stock shifter is used for "powershifting" the good old muncie. When I PV'd the car, I just jacked up the drivers side, switched the lever positions and went off to ride through a successful PV. (passed) if the shifter is properly neutral gated in short throw, it will convert to long without adjustment. I can be done in a parking lot (Lancaster Natonal) in about 20 minutes if the car is COLD!- Top

Re: 4spd shifter short throw vs long throw
Jack, no beef, just another opinion (mine only), in addition to the info that i've done it and readjustment isn't required, at least on a '65. Short vs long is a personal choice, up to the owner, and is not too hard to reverse for a PV attempt. Others may have different preferences, only real note of intrest is that it goes back and forth without needing readjustment of the rods (at least in the few cars i've tried it.)- Top

Re: 4spd shifter short throw vs long throw
Bill,
I agree. My SB 71 was short throw when I bought it 5 years ago, and I have never changed it "back" to long. Heck, it feels strange when I get in a car that is still in long position.
When replacing a throwout bearing in my friend's 70, we took the shifter out and cleaned it. I readjusted it and swapped it over to short, and he's been smiling ever since. He can't believe that his car could shift so nicely. In fact, we'll drive it again 5 hours down to Bloomington tomorrow.
Food for thought.

Re: 4spd shifter short throw vs long throw
Failing the performance stuff because of the shifter mod is silly. No one looks to see that all cars show zero mileage, like they all showed at final assmebly, or have the correct amount of gas in the tank. So why not recognize that since the cars aren't new (just not modified) and have miles who cares. Changing the shifter throw is no more a mod than putting on miles or filling the gas tank.
I just got my new C5. I took it right off the transporter with no dealer prep. Seems the front thingie that says Corvette needs to have holes drilled in the front bumper/fascia to mount it. So what's deal years from now? Everyone who didn't prep their cars themselves like me (I used velcro to attach it instead of the screws) gonna be banned?

Re: 4spd shifter short throw vs long throw
That's interesting. I'm not sure how that thingie will be judged someday years from now. It would fall under the category as a dealer installed item. That is sort of like the dealer installed floor mats. Those are not generally judged. I don't think you will loose much points if you velcro or screw it in place or leave it in the bag or whatever it came in. You'll easily make up the points if you drive it to the meet 20 years from now!
Enjoy your C5.
