    Roy-----

Yes, there is available a neoprene rear main seal for 55-58 Chevrolet small blocks. I don't know who actually manufactures this seal, but I'm sure that it's one of the major manufacturers. Paragon sells this seal and I'm sure that it's also available from other aftermarket sources.

My 265 engine overhaul gasket set from Victor (Dana) had a rubber seal included.

I replaced mine about three years ago. The one I used had two neoprene half moon seals just like any other split lip seal.
There were also two half moon pieces of wire that fit with the seal into the grove.
The wire helps the seal to fit tight in the grove.

I off set the seal joints just a bit from the bearing cap joint.
I also used a small amount of Ultra Copper sealer on the butt ends of the seal and at the corners of the bearing cap.

I followed the instructions and let it set 24 hours, knock on wood,it hasn't since.

Roy: over the years i've rebuilt or re-main sealed several 265's and 283's with rope seals. they suck or i'm a poor seal installer. all the ropes leaked, either immedtiatly or within a couple hundred miles. Once i started installing the neoprene seals(Gary Pronesti @ 20 bucks each--email me for his address), concrete floors under oil pan are white/grey, not blue/black. mike

I used the one Paragon sells when I rebuilt my '57 270 six years ago - has never leaked a single drop.
