Can anyone tell me the recommended speedo drive gear for a T10 with 3:36 rearend and 205-75 R15 tires. The maincase is 61 and the tailshaft is 65. The gear I checked was the one that came out the side with the cable mount. It is steel or alum? with 22 teeth. Any info. would be appreciated. Peter

Re: C1 61 speedo gear
Peter----
First, let's get some terms straight here. The speedometer DRIVE gear is the gear on the transmission mainshaft. For 57-67 Corvettes this gear is a steel gear and 2 different 8 tooth gears were used. This gear requires removal and diassembly of the transmission to change.
The speedometer DRIVEN gear is the gear which mates with the above-referenced gear and can be removed from the side of the transmission extension housing. To remove it, a single 1/4-20 cap screw and retainer are removed. Then, the FITTING is pulled out and the gear is a simple slip fit in the FITTING.
For 1961, I believe that most DRIVEN gears were nylon plasic, as was the case with laterapplications. Some of the gears for numerically high rear ratios were steel, though. NONE were aluminum. However, a 22 tooth gear should be nylon.
In any event, the gear that you most likely require for the tires and 3.36 ratio that you have is a 20 tooth BLUE gear of GM #3987920. This gear is still available from GM.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
