Only 400 Split Windows on the road today?

We mentioned this statement once before, but here is the supposed source for this quote:

" OF ALL THE SPLIT WINDOW CARS PRODUCED IN 1963, LESS
THAN 400 HAVE THE ORIGINAL SPLIT WINDOW AND ARE STILL ON
THE ROAD IN THE USA." SOURCE, CORVETTE MAGAZINE

Anyone read this in Corvette Magazine or have any idea what they really said that has been so twisted around in eBay ads?

Well if you are throwing yourself open to just ideas - it's a typo or mis-print or a reference to a silly guestimate of the few that are driven vs pampered/garaged/trailored...? I dunno.

I would bet that 4 thousand would be low.

Same type of magazine b_____t that

is calling EX-122 the "Motorama" car, if such a quote exists. All you really have to know about this car is that you couldn't get Power Steering with FI, it's 5000 serail #'s too early to have a wood grained wheel, the 64-7 console is a nice touch, a 64 master cylinder, etc.....Yep it's a steal!! Look for it at one of the January auctions.....

Does this carm have one of the "240" 57 FI units that author W. W. told us about 25 years ago? Just "perpetuating the myth!"

Given the fact that NCRS has judged 341 split window 1963's. I wonder where the other 59 are?

They must have "weird statistic" dept...

how do they define "on the road"? Daily commuters? Driven show? How in earth could they possibly know? I understand that 46 of Tucker's cars still exist. Would these idiots think there are 46 Tuckers "on the road"? I think the true number of daily driven Tuckers is probably "0".

This really bothers me. This is the 2nd time in a years time that someone is offering a bogus car for sale on E-Bay. I have faith that Loren Lumberg is correct in what he posted about the FI and power steering, woodgrained streeing wheel, incorrect console etc. Whar bothers me is that someone who knows no better is going to be ripped. Last time the people on this board fixed the problem with a call to the cops. I wish there were a way each one of this rip offs could be fixed. The buyer beware caveat at the bottom of e-bays adds sure hits the mark.

                  David,

------While I understand and agree with Loren on the various incorrect pieces on this 63,I certainly didnt see anything that would warrant calling the police about.Maybe call the NCRS police that seem to be out there everywhere!!!!!!!Do your due diligence like anybody should do.If you dont and there are surprises you have nobody to blame except yourself. Those other instances where the help of the constabulary was called upon were necessary because of various fraudulent statements and ID tag problems.Rightfully so I might add!........Bill S

Probably more than 400 Split Windows that are RED!

At least it seems that way at some shows!

I really wasn't intending to criticize the car in the auction but just that this seems to be the second time in about a month or two that someone has used this "400 split windows" reference.

There are usually 5 to 10 on eBay each week and that can be 250 to 500 a year alone.

Someone isn't using their head much, or trying to create an artificial market with word trickery.

It's plain ole nonsense. That is not even an educated extrapolation number. I also have seen that number cited, elsewhere in print as well.

So has anyone verified the source?

I mean, it is easy to say "only 400 exist" and just as easy to say "only 400 exist, as per Corvette Magazine", but when and where was it actually printed, if at all?

I know the number doesn't make sense, but maybe some magazine is printing garbage, or being taken WAY out of context.

After all, this implies that 10,000 cars have had the split removed (and maybe reinstalled) or have been removed from the road in some way (crashed, parted out, or stored).

That is an awful lot of cars to be "gone" for a model and year so popular.

We aren't talking Edsel Pacer or '65 Biscayne after all.

Re: I see more cobras on the road than vettes

This has nothing to do with 63 splits, but in the San Fransisco bay area, I see at least 15 so called cobras, all 67s, to every one mid year on the road. Talk about flooding the market. The last time I saw a solid axel, was a 60 that I followed into the parking lot of a specialty car dealer. Just where did all the clasic vettes go?

                            SE PA...

on any warm weekend afternoon in Bucks County you would be hard put not to see a couple of C1's per hour on any major road. Not to mention C2's, C3's etc., plus oodles of street rods, etc. Maybe California isn't the collector car paradise I have heard...

E-mailed the seller and pointed out the problems with the numbers correct split window. They claim they took it in on trade for a street rod and are going by what the previous owner told them. Supposedly got the "400" number from " Corvette Magazine". Got a little testy when I asked if they had checked transmission, rear end or any other numbers. Guess it's E-Bay as usual, BUYER BEWARE!
