    C2 console paint prep

I want to repaint the red textured area on my 1966 console. As the old paint is lifting off in small areas should I remove all the old paint? If so how?
I plan on using the vinyl dye "paint" sold by Paragon.

    Randy -

One of the previous owners of my '66 had sprayed the console with flat black paint. It was so thick I didn't know the console was textured.

I used water soluble paint stripper, taking care to put it only on the paint. I applied multiple coats and rinsed frequently. When most of the paint was gone, I switched to lacquer thinner for final clean up.

I masked the trim as best I could, and sprayed the console with several light coats of dye. After it dried, I used toothpicks and cotton swabs dipped in lacquer thinner to clean up the trim.

That was a couple of years ago, and it still looks great.

    Good luck with your project!

      Randy:

Would definitely recommend removing the original lacquer by wiping away with chemical stripper followed by more wiping down with lacquer thinner.

Mask, then prime lightly with SEM self-etching primer (aerosol). Let dry 24 hours and then apply vinyl dye/paint in accordance with the instructions. I spray it with an HVLP gun with 45 psi going into the gun. You want maximum atomization so you can mist on several light coats. That will preserve the embossed grain pattern. Take your time and the results will be better than OEM.

Dye? Why in the heck would you want to use dye on a hard metal part?
Use Zink chromate as a primer and use paint.

          Dye?
I am refering to the Paragon aerosol "Vinyl Spray Dye" which they say "can also be used on metal, rubber.." To be used with their #7006 metal primer

If you know where I can find 66 Rally RED aerosol paint please advise.

I suspect the "dye" is just a thinned down mix of the paint.

If you're mixing the paint and using an air gun, you could probably add additional thinner and get good results. If you're using cans, as I did, use the dye. Paint would likely fill in the texture lines.

By the way, I didn't use primer on my console.
