    INTAKE MANIFOLD RESURFACING

Although I asked them not to unless they were warped, the shop that first worked on my heads resurfaced them, saying it would prevent a blown head gasget. I refused to pay them for it, but now my intake manifold doesn't fit as well now. Since I don't know how much they took off the heads, how do I tell the shop I now use how much to take off the intake manifold so it fits properly? (I assume they took the minimum amount off the heads). I am working on a 400HP car.

if they only took .005/.010 from the heads you can just slot the manifold bolt holes with a round file and you should be fine

      Rob,

I had exactly the same problem with my L/89 restoration.
I had my machine shop mount the intake in a bridgeport and
they reamed the bolt holes slightly larger. It worked great.

I know a good machine shop that works on old muscle cars, I'll take it to them and see what they can do...

Rob: as clem noted , if the machine shop removed a minimal amount form the heads ( less than ten thousands) egg shaping the intake fastening holes with rotary bit will probably allow for attaching intake to heads. if amount removed is super(and it can be) you'll probably have to haul the block, heads and intake back to new machine shop for an expensive cure, but cured it can be. mike

It fits fine with just the rubber end gasgets. Does this give me an idea how much was removed from the heads? Maybe there are thinner side gasgets I can use.

              Just wondering

If he is using a composition head gasket instead of the steel shim, wouldn't that make up for a light head cut?

measure from the head gasket surface to the head bolt spot face on the lower set of head bolt holes using a pair of mics and then compare to a uncut head. someone here on the board should have a uncut head to measure. you can also measure to the 3 locating pads on the heads that chevy uses to index machine work. if you machine the intake manifold gasket surface you must also machine the bottom of the intake manifold to allow the use of the end seals

The side gasgets I am using have the metal in them. Would an all composition (if there is one) gasget be thinner and possibly solve my problem?

you want to use the side gaskets that are like stock,black/dark gray fiber with a metal between the top and bottom for the best seal.

                      Re: INTAKE MANIFOLD RESURFACING

I found a chart in my engine rebuild book showing how much to remove from the intake manifold sides and bottom, based on how much was removed from the heads. By the way, who supplies the gasget you described to me. I have one from Paragon, supposively made by fel-pro, with a "Corteco" logo stamped on it. It has the steel in it and is light grey.

my color discription may be off but yours sounds correct. i always used GM intake gaskets because they bound to the head and manifold suface for a good seal. joe l may have a current part# if they are still available.

                          PROBLEM SOLVED

The intake side gasgets I was trying to install were from Paragon. They are CORTECO. They told me that they were made by fel-pro.(I have since been told that fel-pro doesn't make gasgets for anyone else) They are very thick, and although they may work on an engine that has had no alterations from factory specs, they wouldn't fit mine. I got true fel-pro intake gasgets today, which also have the steel shim in them, between composition, but are thinner and they fit fine, with minimal or no interference with the bolts in the holes.

                          Thanks for your replies
