    C2 Spare Tire Lock

I'm missing the spare tire lock and rubber cover for my 66. Anybody recommend the best place to buy a repro that is the closest to original?

    Regards,
    Dave Kitch

Suggestion, Paragon or anyone else. The reproduced model seems to be correct for 1966.

Why not get a real one from Pat Krauss. He can key it to your exixting key for PV purposes.

Maybe I should give my reproduction lock to Dave and get Pat's contact number or e-mail and get one for my 63. The repro I have has the 1/4" hole for rain drops to fall through.

If my memory serves me, a '63 lock is going to be tough to find. They are a one year only item. I was lucky to scounge three of four over the years from car dealers. Lotsa luck. (no those locks are long gone)

Jerry, as I recall the early 63's had no hole for water to drain. I may not be correct, but I think the 1/4 inch hole started around serial 14000. Check your VIN sequence against the JM.

I wonder if it would be acceptable for one of my model makers to remove the plating, plug the small hole and chromate the assembly again. No one on this earth, other than you and me, will ever know? Has this been done before or would this be the first time? Or do judges understand and only access a minimum penalty?

I think that the deduction would be minimal. It looks like a lock, functions like a lock, but differs from typical factory production by a small percentage. As I remember the total points on the lock are not great anyway.
I seem to remember that the cylinder in the early locks was of a smaller od that the later locks. Am I confused?

Dick - You're correct. The '63-'66 spare tire locks had a 5/8" dia. core face bezel while the '67 and later locks had a 3/4" dia bezel. Pete

I was wondering if my little pea brain was halucinating I knew the '63 was unique, but I had forgotten about the '64-66. Must be sniffing too much cow manure.

Jerry - Interesting comment on plugging the spare tire lock hole and re-chromating the assembly; but from my experience it's only worthwhile (and it might not be that worthwhile) replating the '67 and later spare tire locks because the '66 and earlier locks are painted black. I would expect a judge to be able to observe a '67 or later spare tire lock that was modified because of the bezel configuration; especially if it's on an early '63 w/o a spare tire lock boot. Pete

Hay Dick - Early '63s were unique; no drain hole, then later in "63 came the 1/4" dia drain hole and then in '66 came the 3/8" drain hole. '67 started the letter keys with the larger lock core bezel. And for now on stay out of the cow paddies, good buddy. Pete
