    65 Spare tire fit-up

I've (finally) gotten my spare tire tub installed on my 65. I'm running 205 75 Michelin X WW tires on repo quick take off wheels. I thought I had purchased the long bolts for the spare tire carrier, so was suprised when the wheel wouldn't go all the way into the tub. I can engage the latch at the hex, but not at the shoulder, so I can't fit the tire lock on the end of the bolt. Even tried a floor jack to raise everything up (I'm kinda puny), but even that couldn't allow me to seat the carrier on the correct location on the shoulder of the rear bolt/latch assembly. Questions: anyone using a 205 75 spare on alloy wheels? Does it fit up correctly? Should I suspect the bolt length?

The cross section on the original 775x15 is quite narrow. You will find that modern day 205x15 are quite a bit wider than the old stuff, thus your problem it won't fit. The gold line or red line bolts may still not be enough depending on actual measurement of your tire width. Tire diameter should not be a problem.

Jim --- I don't have a 205 -75 on a knock-off spare, but I can vouch for the fact that spare tire carriers are VERY sensitive to tire size. I bought a non-DOT 7.75 B.F.Goodrich 4-ply Nylon w/90% tread at Carlisle, for a spare on my '65 stock 5½" steel rim, and found that it stuck up in the carrier -- the diameter was excessive. Yet a non-DOT Goodyear Power Cushion whitewall w/80% tread on an original knock-off rim fits easily, but it's marked "Low Profile".

You say you have the long bolts; all 3 of them (the 2 forward "strap" [hinge] bolts and the latch [locking] bolt) ? In '65 there were 3 different lengths of strap bolts and 2 different lock bolts, depending on tire/wheel combinations. Blackwall or whitewall tires on steel rims used #3841463 strap bolts (9.25" overall length / 8.32" from shoulder (at frame) to flat (near road)). The latch bolt was #3841464, 7.00" overall length. Knock-offs with black or white walls used strap bolts #3833383; 8.80" flat to welded-nut shoulder / 9.62" overall (the latch bolt remained the same). Gold line tires, whether on steel or knock-off rims used strap bolts #3872958; 9.40" shoulder to flat / 10.38" overall, and the strap bolt was #3872959; 7.88" overall. You may not have the longest bolts available to accomodate this radial tire.

As a temporary fix, you can undo one strap bolt at a time, slip as many washers as possible on the shoulder that will still give you full thread engagement on the bolt (stick your finger through the hole in the cross-member to feel the top of the welded frame nut).

Would it be possible to use the bolts off of a '68 or '69 to accomodate the wider tires?
