    C1 Correct 3rd member

    Hi,

I have the opportunity to buy a restored posi 3rd member with correct casting # (3789812) and date code, BUT it has the thick P (for Positraction), not the thin P. Will this be considered wrong from a judging point of view. Should I wait for a thin P unit?

    Thanks,

    Christer

P.S. Does any of you people have a Posi 3rd member for sale, dated between april and june 1962?

    Christer----

Generally, I believe that the "thick P" third member castings were Tonawanda-cast pieces which were used in passenger cars, but not Corvettes. The casting numbers were the same for both passenger cars and Corvettes, however. If you examine the case further, I think you'll find a "T" cast somewhere upon it. This was the foundry mark for the Tonawanda foundry (and, also, the old Tonawanda forge which used to be co-located). For general interest, the Tonawanda foundry was shut down in 1984. The Tonawanda forge became part of Saginaw Division of GM and, later, was "spun-off" as part of the American Axle and Manufacturing "divestiture".

Gawd - Joe L's response was superior. Just love it. However, on the judging field, the numbers on your rear end will not be checked or judged. The basic configuration will be noted - so a 9" Ford may be problematic, but any other Chev compatable piece should be OK, I think. Best, DC
