    Voltage Regulator application - Joe?

I have a voltage regulator with the following markings:

    12VN
    2E
    1119253E

    What was this used on?

    Thanks

    Bill----

The application for the GM #1119253 regulator was 1960-62 Oldsmobile.

GM #1119004 is for an old application. It was originally used for 1955-57 Chevrolets with 40 amp capacity, but it was never used for Corvettes. It is a "low cut in" type unit. Although you didn't mention the date code, the one that you have is likely a later SERVICE replacement since it is an "E" series unit which I don't think existed in the 55-57 period.

Thanks Joe. What did you mean by, "It is a "low cut in" type unit"? It is dated for May with a "1", which could be '61 or '71, doubtful for '81. My car is a 62 327/340 which required or came with the 35 amp regulator so it makes sense that this could be a 40 amp service replacement perhaps from '71.

              Clare-----

"Low cut in" refers to the special operational characteristics of this regulator. I think that it refers to the voltage level at which this regulator initiates charging. Normally, regulators do this at voltages below about 14.3 volts. I suppose that this one does so at a voltage lower than that. I don't have specs for it, though.

I expect that you're correct about the year of manufacture beiung 61 or 71. Although this regulator was available in SERVICE for many years, I believe that it was discontinued prior to 81.

This regulator was NEVER specified by GM as a SERVICE replacement for a 1962 Corvette. However, it's completely possible that someone installed it regardless of its SERVICE specification. It's also possible that this unit has been through a commercial rebuilder's operation and has been "converted" so that the part number on it is meaningless. This particular regulator was rebuildable and, at one time, carried a core charge. So, if you purchased one, you had to return a core for rebuilding or pay the core charge.
