    matching numbers?

I've been reading the thread below about the big block 67 that may not be what the owner thinks it is. My dilemma is not quite so exensive but I beleave there is a principle involved. I bought my 65 last summer from a private owner. Its a convertable factory air small block ,power steering and windows and was sold as a matching numbers car. Since I bought it out of town I did some research in the area there and found a simi-retired guy who had the local corvette restoration shop and was a ncrs judge. We met at the guys house that was selling to find out he was the same guy who had appraised the car for the owner in 1994 for the insurance company, so he new the car. To make a long story short he looked the car over again for me and said it was still a matching numbers car and that it had a hQ stamping for a factory A/C car. About 2 months after I bought the car I started going over all the dates and found it was really a june built car with a july built engine and tranny with a hc stamping on the engine pad. My vin number is stamped on the pad but with the july build date it means nothing. MY question is how far would you take this, could he have mis-read this engine two times. I have been doing alot of thinking about this and I'm just not sure what to do.Thanks for any reply.Roland.

    Re: matching numbers?

For starters, you did not look at the engine code yourself? HC vs HQ is pretty easy to spot. Did you hire the "NCRS judge" to act as your advisor? If a professional fee changed hands, you may have recourse, but you need to see a Lawyer, not a tech board.

yes I did hire him as an adviser. And no I'm not going to get a lawyer. He showed me differant areas that he was looking that day but I took his word to what was there. At that time I had little knowledge to what I was looking at anyway. I guess I'd like to see if others would just chaulk it up to experiance, or pursue it.

I think to become sufficiently informed as to whether to pursue any action or "chalk it up" you NEED to discuss this with a lawyer, not with a bunch of tech junkies. The answer will depend on the laws of your state, as well as any written documentation passed between you and the fellow you hired to represent you.

Did you get what you paid for? Was it a deal or did you pay a premium for what you thought it was? If was a good deal and your happy with the car drop it, if you really wanted a numbers matching car and didn't get what you paid for pursue it. IMHO

            Re: matching numbers?

I agree with Kevin.....if you are happy with the car, and you paid a reasonable price, then you have no case, IMHO. But, "matching numbers" and "original engine" are two entirely different things. In your case, the final build date of your car predates the engine cast date, so, for all practical purposes, the car should not have been represented as "numbers matching", let alone "original engine". If it were judged, then the engine case would be penalized on all counts, excepting the part number (assuming that the part number is correct).

If you paid $50K or less for your car, assuming that it was restored within the last few years, or is a very good original car, then I would be satisfied. If you paid a premium for a "numbers matching", or "original engine" 1965 BB car, in #1 or #2 condition, then I would consider litigation.

I am not an expert on prices, and they will vary widely, based on color, condition, options, etc.,etc., but I think that the price I listed should be "ball park".

Just a thought but why not drive and enjoy what sounds to be a truly wonderful car and keep in perspective the apparent standards of an organization regarding the surface of a tiny non-functional portion of iron.

                Re: matching numbers?

Keven,Joe and Tod, Thanks for the replys. Your answers were exactly what I was hoping for. When I first started looking for a mid year I knew matching numbers was a hard find, so I didn't make it a priority. Yes I do love this car and wouldn't want to part with it, I just didn't want to be a chump. So its good to know that others would do the same.Thanks.

                  Addendum

                  Roland:

I reread your original post, and see that your car is a SB, not a BB, so I misspoke. The "ballpark" number that I posted yesterday should be adjusted downward by about $10K.
