    C-1 Dupont Lacquer

Anyone have a source of Dupont lacquer paint in the southeast? I need someone who can mix some Tuxedo black, formula # 88L.

Any Dupont jobber should be able to get this out of Atlanta for you.

I've been on the phone for the last three days with the DuPont tech/sales rep trying to find some without success.

88L was discontinued in the early to mid eighties. It was replaced with 99S. When panel painting, there is a decided difference in the two colors. 88L takes a gray tint.

Well, all this doesn't sound too encouraging. Does anyone have access to the MIXING formula for 88L? All my sources come up with the same "99" formula number, and if it isn't the right color there isn't much point in using it.

Ed, The 99S formula is so close that unless you had the two paints on adjacent panels, you would never be able to tell the difference. I have no source of Dupont Lacquer any longer in my city and have switched to PPG lacquers. I find their DDL 9300 to be a dead match for the 99 code Dupont paint.

To clarifh my previous post, the color difference is not noticible unless you panel paint as John posted. Painting a whole car would make it impossible to tell the difference.

If you do not have any luck finding it in PPG, email me and I will check with my jobber.

I suspect that the exact toners used to mix the 88 are no longer produced and that the 99 is the closest formula that could be produced using available toners. Now, the decision to try to get lacquer or simply revert to Chromabase and tint the clear. One concern with lacquer is that if touch up or repair is need in say 5 years, will the lacquer still be available. The information I'm getting is that many, if not most manufacturers are dropping the line altogether in the near future.
