    Re: Lacquer availability

    Now you got me worried.
I am going to be painting my 61 in the next year. If I should get the paint now, how much should I get? Roman Red.

Two gallons will paint your 61 with about a quart left over for later. Just in case.

My old Ditzler repaint manual says 125-150 percent reduction for acrylic lacquer products - 1.25 to 1.50 parts thinner to one part paint.

Select the proper thinner for the temperature and humidity conditions prevailing when you do the job.

Joe, would two gallons be sufficient to paint a 64 coupe, or would three gallons be better for "just in case"? By the way, the color would be the car's original Tuxedo Black if it's sill available. Thanks

I would suggest buying that extra gallon for insurance in case any repairs are needed in the future.

The Tuxedo Black formula was used for all GM black acrylic lacquer jobs from '58 to the end of lacquer use in the early eighties. My Cosworth Vega's black acrylic lacquer finish is the same paint code as '63 Corvette Tuxedo Black.

The nice thing about this color (at least in the PPG line) is that it is available in "factory pack", so it can be ordered from a dealer who does not even have a lacquer mixing system.

The PPG number is DDL 9300 for a quart can. Gallons might have a different code.

              Jack,

If it were a metallic color, I would say three gallons but black, if the body is prepared well, two gallons would be more than enough. Remeber by the time it is thinned you will have 5 and 1/2 gallons of paint out of that 2 gallons of base.

If you want to buy three it would not hurt anything, just your pocketbook. As Duke mentions the PPG is factory pack and you can always go back and get another gallon and it will be the same mix.

Good luck with you black 64.

Joe, just how much(ballpark figure) would one expect to pay for a gallon of paint(Tuxedo Black)? Thanks again

Thanks again for your help! Since you feel that 2 gallons will do the car, I presume that if I choose to do the coves in white, that a gallon would be good. Which manufacturer would you recommend for each? The paint that is on it turned orange as Roman Red will do.

                      Jack,

I like Dupont or PPG. Either is a quality product made by outstanding companies. You should check with your favorite painter and see what they recommend. Some guys will only shoot one brand because they know the mixes and feel comfortable shooting those in a specific gun. The decision you reach might be swayed by availability in your area.

                      Good luck with your project,

                      JR
