    C3 Deciphering a POP

If the info I'm looking for here is in a book, please let me know. Otherwise, I rely on the collective knowledge of this board.

OK...More education on a snowy day. I have the POP and warrenty book for my 68. Some of the stuff on the POP is obvious, but other things are not.
First line "STD 974" (this is a red car with std black vinyl) Then on the same line, the full VIN. After the last # of the VIN, there is a space and the letter "H" What is the H?

Next line "T0708IRH" The T0708IR is on the engine stamp pad. What is the H?

On the same line and under the VIN it says "FB0605W" What is that? All the way over on the same line is a "7" directly under the "H" that is on the first line. What is that? On the third line it says "P8H27" and then all the way across under the H and 7 vertically, there is a bowtie symbol oriented vertically.

The rest of the info is owners name and address and delivery date (7-31-68)

    Thanks

Vette Vues Fact Book 1968-1972 Stingray by M.F. Dobbins, has the breakdown in it, can be bought at the NCRS library. There is also a Protecto plate decoding book available on ebay, several are listed for sale they are for 65-72 years.

Rich going from memory of looking at my original owner 68 stampings some time ago the P8H27 is the stamping that was on your original Muncie transmission. The FB0605W is what was stamped on your 68's original rear end. The H is identified in a above post.

            Rich

LEt me try to take a crack at this, I have the Corvette by the numbers book

The H in both spots indicates Holley Equiped Carbs, with the IR at the end of the engine code indicating 435hp manual transmission.

The FB0605W looks like the rear end code. Interestingly enough the book does not show a "FB" code for 1968. My guess is that it's close enough to 1969 for the FB to mean 4:11HD Positraction date coded June 5th made in the Warren Plant.

The "7" indicates that month that the car was built, here it would be July.

The P8H27 is the transmission code. Your code looks to be "P" for 4spd Muncie, "8" for the model year, "H" for the month built being June and the 27 for the day or together June 27, 1968.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other code questions. I have the books since I bought my 69 435 and did a bunch of research on it.

Quick question, are you a member of the Long Island Chapter, your name sounds familiar?

Yes Rich, I am a member of the Metroli chapter, but have not been real active...always something else to do when the group has an event, although I was at Unique the year before this past fall.

Thanks for the info. The car does have a 4:11 posi rear. And the other stuff makes sense too.

I have ordered the book that was suggested in the post above.

              Thanks
