I got a motor vehicle record request form from them and sent in the amount of money asked for on the form. I just received a letter from them asking for another $24 to $40 depending on if you want uncertified or certified history. What is that all about.

Randy, you said you got a letter from them, but I'll bet what you actually got was an institutional green pre-printed form with the appropriate boxes checked. If you got a real letter with real words intended just for you, I'll fall off my chair here. You might consider the following based on my experience in Texas:

          (1) I am not surprised that a government form is out of date regards fees. Updating forms takes time, and there is little incentive for things to move fast in government. Sending your form and check back to you for additional funds is NO problem for them. They are not singling you out...it's standard operating procedure...if it doesn't meet all the conditions on their little checklist, it goes back to the sender.

          (2) Certified vs. uncertified. Your choice here depends on the purpose you have in mind for the information. For the extra $16, you will get exactly the same document(s), except now it(they) will be sealed with an embossed stamp like a notary seal, with a hand-written date and signature stating that it is a true and lawful certified copy of those records...duh?

          (3) One or eight records? You will get whatever they have since the last time they purged their records. This will vary from state to state, but if it's ten years for example, you will get all transactions that occurred in that ten years. Any title transfers before that, you can probably kiss goodbye.

Good Luck, and remember that patience helps a lot.

I have a '72 that I recently purchased in MD. The previous owner had the original license plates that he said were first on the car (I have them now). They are AZ plates and have a '73 sticker on them. Would these be of any use to me or the AZ DMV in conducting my search for the original owner?

I had to provide the ADOT with the VIN of the car.

Check NCRS archives (in November) for the URL to the .PDF file on ADOT that someone (Jack Whittle?) provided to me.
