same question
I'd like to know the correct information to that, too.
Some of my manifold bolts (for 68 L89) are the correct "built in" type, my others have individual washers.
The 68-69 JM (Mechanical, #9 EXHAUST MANIFOLDS, page 61) includes the built in washer bolts (3rd variety) but goes on to say Mark IV exhaust manifold bolts didn't use washers. THEN, on 68 AIM pages H343 and H358 (for the L36 and L71) it shows ONE washer to be installed on the (furthest) left rear bolt, to fasten the oil pressure line clip. Additional thanks. Washers go under the heads of the pairs of bolts securing the ENDS of the manifolds (cylinders 1,7, 6, 2); Longer bolt locations at center of ram's-horn (for cylinders 3,5,4, and 6don't require washers.- Top

Re: same question
Chester,
Joe is on vacation. Last week he posted a notice that he would be off the board for several weeks. Some of us saw him in Bloomington and he was talking about possibaly attending the Regional in Boston.
The AIM will not tell you about exhaust manifold bolts, since those (except for those bolts removed to install accessory brackets) were installed at the engine plant. The AIMs that are available cover those items installed at St. Louis. Many parts, including the engine, transmission, front spindles, steering linkage and trailing arms were shipped to St. Louis as assemblies. The details of those assemblies are not int he AIM and for the most part we have to rely on original unmolested cars for the answers.
I have some information on these bolts for 1970-1972, but am reluctant to apply that to 1968.
Perhaps someone with an unmolested original 68 will step to the fore.

Re: same question
Terry,
To be sure, I agree with waiting for the unmolested original information.
Hopefully some will be coming, and the more the better, rather than to rely on one example. Up to a point I also have a tendency to "logically" agree with what Gene is saying. What I have is a 68 with 67,775 original miles, BUT it was also through a (quality) restoration 10 years ago, before I had anything to do with it. That alone pretty much dis-qualifies me from the "unmolested" original.
Since my previous post, and upon further examination, my exhaust manifold bolts that HAVE washers, have LOCK washers, which I know are not correct. I think those would have been a logical (non-original) addition since these bolts have a tendency over time to loosen with heat/cool, etc. Like I had mentioned the other exhaust manifold bolts I have are the "built-in" washer type.
I don't know if John's (#29964) info is coming from "original", but the 68-69 TM seems consistant (in this area) with information, like Gene's, as it begins to appear.
With all "disclaimers" in place, and just out of curiousity, could you let us know what the 70-72 information is like? I'm not trying to jump to any conclusion and certainly don't want anyone else to. It's more of a consideration of what information has already come forward. Just like chester, I have an un-used pack of these washers that I don't know what to do with. Thanks. Tom #24014- Top
