Re: 1967 steering gear box
re steering gear box joe lucia rebuilding the steering box is not too difficult if you have some decent mechanical ability most of the parts are still available from gm overhaul procedures are described in the chassis service manual if you don't have one for a ' the procedures are the same for all corvettes in fact except for the worm shaft assembly and the side cover the steering boxes are identical there is also an excellent article describing the overhaul in a back issue of the restorer magazine this article provides a lot of insight not found in the gm overhaul manual and it also provides you with all of the part numbers for the service parts i can also provide these but it is a long list generally you should replace all of the internal parts except for the worm shaft assembly and the pitman shaft inspect these carefully if there is wear you will need to replace them they are by far the most expensive parts but you usually don't need to replace them if you elect not to do the job yourself i can recommend several rebuilders with considerable experience carters corvette in livermore ca allen's stainless steel exhaust in logansport indiana van steel in clearwater fl i believe that mike allen also sells kits which include all the parts you need ken carter at carter's corvette also has all the parts you might need and most likely even some that might be discontinued if you wish to use your existing cast iron side cover instead of the replacement aluminum version you will need to install a new bushing in your cover this is a little tricky and the procedure is not covered in the overhaul manual it is covered in the corvette restorer article that i mentionedIn Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
