Hello and Happy Holidays. I have learned that GM never kept the records of older Vettes. With this in mind, is there any way that I can find "as-built" information about my Vette? I have not been able to find a build sheet on my car and I am hoping that there is another source of information out there somewhere. Please help me restore my Vette back to its original configuration. Thanks

What year Corvette? '67 and later had a Corvette Order Copy on top of the fuel tank (although few remain), the build Broadcast for all Bowling Green-built cars is available from the NCM, and if the car was sold new in Canada, they have the records. That's about it - there is no information on U.S.-sold St. Louis cars other than the tank sticker on '67 and later cars.- Top

Re: Vette VIN Research
John,
Thanks for responding. The car is a 1971 LT1 and I have not lowered the tank to see if it has a sticker. I have moved the tank collar and used mirrors and a flashlight and I see nothing. It sounding more and more like I'm out of luck. It is very important for me to find out about this car because it has some unique features. Thanks.- Top

Re: Vette VIN Research
Don't know what unique features you have on your 71 LT-1, but one it will not have is factory installed air-conditioning. What kind of owner books did you get with the purchase of your car? If you have the warranty booklet with the metal plate, it will have engine, transmission, and rear end information.- Top

Re: Vette VIN Research
My car has the M22 trans, manual steering, manual brakes, oversized Harrison radiator, radio delete originally (previous owner installed a radio), no air, 7 leaf rear spring. It supposedly had a heavy duty suspension but the previous owner told me he replaced the coil springs and shocks because it was too stiff (and then he went and put Gabriel TRUCK shocks in the rear!). The car came stripped and money was spent on performance rather than comfort.- Top

Vette VIN Research - check the tank again
I made that mistake in '77 with my '68. I looked from above and below with mirrors and flashlights, and couldn't see anything. I assumed it was long gone.
In '92, I dropped the tank to do some work and found most of the sheet still on the tank. Unfortunately, some of the top portion with dealer information was gone. It was so covered in dust and dirt I couldn't see it from looking past the rubber cup.
The realist says it was gone long ago, but the dreamer says if I had dropped it in '77, I may have had a little more valuable paper.
Don't assume it is gone because you can't peek around a corner and see it.- Top

Re: Vette VIN Research - check the tank again
Thanks. I am new to the Vette world and want to restore my car correctly. I have a hard time believing that there are no archives from GM anywhere, but apparently that is the case. I'm not going to give up looking for info but I will have to make do with the tools and info that I am given. I have been able to track the cars ownership through PA in the 90's from NC in the 80's from GA. Thats where it stops, I am having a very difficult time getting info out of Georgia's DMV. I am hoping to track down the original owner or dealer.
Thanks again.- Top

Re: Vette VIN Research - check the tank again
I tried to find mine from the top and it also was covered with dirt and appearsed to be gone. When I decided to pull the tank 6 weeks ago, I only found the sheet after I ripped out the rubber boot between the body and the tank filler neck.- Top

Re: Research - Is the Emission sticker present?
Often forgotten piece of documentation is the emission sticker, if you can conclude it is the original sticker. It will list both part number and broadcast code and indicate the engine/tranny combintation the vehicle was certified for in 71. It can also be traced to the engine suffix and therefore the ci/hp combo and will even indicate the emission system the vehicle was certified with.
If it's still there...you'll find it just above the brake booster on the flat part of the firewall that juts out to the brake booster.Tom Russo

Re: Vette VIN Research - check the tank again
Klaus, just wondering if yours is a 68 lemans blue convertible? I sold mine to a young German fellow around 1980. Anyway, if you ever see a 68 convertible owner in Germany--I might have owned that one and could provide a little history of the car from around 1975 to 1980.- Top

Re: Vette VIN Research - check the tank again
It is nice to be reminded that vettes go outside the USA. I tend to think that they are a American thing where German cars come here and American cars stay here. I would imagine that you must get a lot of looks. It would be interesting to know how your car is treated and how common vetts are there (and newer verses older).
Nice to hear from you
