66 Posi tag

I just cleaned up the tag on my 66 BB car, the tag was completely covered with crud. The car is completely orginal and I believe the tag is original, there was no part number. The JG states the tag should have a part number. Was the design changed in late 66? Mine is late July build date.

Was the 66 team leader when current judging manual was written and don't recall any contributors nor myself entertaining anything other than what's in the judging manual. however, times and knowledgle levels change. check with Ray Morrison, current 66 team leader. contact data in Restorer. page 3

As far as I know, the differential posi-tag with the lubricant part number on it was a 1965-only item. Of course, it could have carried over into early 1966. Or, its use could even have ended before the end of the 1965 model year. It's a good thing, too. I'm sure that it was an embarrassment for GM since there NEVER was a lubricant available in SERVICE under that part number. If the obedient and "persnickety" Corvette owner of the day (yes, they existed then, too) were to go to their dealer and ask for that product as GM clearly specified on the tag, the dealer's parts counterman would go nuts looking for it. And, he'd NEVER find it or, even, find a cross-reference to it. GM #9985045 was a PRODUCTION-only part number for the lubricant delivered in BULK to the manufacturing plants.

So, GM dropped the reference to part number on the tag and, instead, specified it only generically. Likely, to avoid a repeat of the same fiasco when they realized that even if they were to include the SERVICE part number of the lubricant, that could change over time and the reference would become obsolete.
