    C-1 Wheel Cylinder Preservation

    I obtained a nice set of used C-1 wheel cylinders. I will be removing the light
    surface rust on the outside. I plan to lightly hone the IDs then put them on the shelf in case I need one in the future.
    What is recommended to keep both the outer and inner surfaces from rusting during storage??
    Thank you,

    small parts, like wheel cylinders, are well suited for storing in a sandwich Baggie. just oil them down good with a cheap motor oil. they should be alive and well when your greatgrand kids decide they need rebuilt and installed on THEIR vette. merry christmas, mike

      Mike;
      Any concerns about the oil residue contamination of the hydraulic system??
      Do you have a suggested cleaning method prior to use??
      Thanks,

        i use an equal mixture of Varsol and diesel fuel to clean parts. Oil residue contamination not a problem if you thoroughly clean the cylinders when you remove them from their hibernation. mike

          I recommend that you disassemble them. Thoroughly degrease the metal parts in solvent then douse them down with WD-40, let the carrier evaporate, and place them in a zip lock bag.

          Clean the rubber parts in alcohol and place them in a separate bag and buy new wheel cylinder kits to keep just in case.

          Wheel cylinders should be assembled with brake fluid, but that brake fluid can absorb moisture and corrode the cylinder bore. This is why you should store them disassembled.

          An alternative would be to assemble them with silicone fluid. Then they can be stored assembled with the outside covered in a film of WD-40, but they could only be installed if the system has been converted to silicone fluid. Otherwise they would have to be disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled with glycol-based fluid.
