      Re: Powder Coating Frames….

It's not original. How well it judges depends on how close it appears to the original finish in gloss and texture. I can't speak from experience because I haven't had a car judged with powder coat but it is definately a superior coating to either the asphalt-based black out (original for a C1) or to a liquid paint coating whether urethane, epoxy, laquer, oil based enamel or otherwise, that is applied to mimic, as closely as possible, the original appearance and finish.

If you want to be totally original and assure yourself of the maximum judging points use whatever is specified for your model. For me, I find it hard to justify spending the money on a restoration and then to use an inferior coating such as the asphalt-based blackout, which the factory applied indescriminately and with very little regard for appearance or long term durability.

Everyone uses the generic term "powder coat" but there are many types of powder coatings available. Epoxy, TGIC polyester, and polyester urethanes are all suitable and approved for automotive uses by the OEMS. OEMS by the way, are increasingly turning to powder coatings for a variety of reasons.

Epoxy's don't hold up as well to UV exposure (it chaulks), TGIC poly and poly urethanes offer the best compromise for UV exposure and overall toughness. Like any other coating, preparation and proper application are the key to a lasting job and appearance. Your car, your call.

Steve, Do you know what type of powder coat you used, (epoxy, urethane polyester, etc.) brand, color/finish? Also, do you know if the coater used any type of preparation,(iron or zinc phospate) prior to applying the powder? Thanks for any info. I'm very much interested in real world applications and long term appearance and performance.
