My insurance company will only cover liability and not comp/collision. Any recommendations for firms that will cover a very nice weekend driver. I am in california. Leland west keeps sending me things in the mail -- anyone know about them?

Re: Non-Technical Question: Insurance
I am not familur with there product But there web site gives an excellent descrition of why you must have AGREED VALUE insurance.
I have collector car insurance on my collector cars,I have never made a claim and hope I never to have to.
Collector car insurance is perfect for me because I use the cars as a collector car If I was to use the car as an extra car,to take to work, take to do errands,to go out to dinner I would not try and use a collector car insurance policy to save on premiums
We have a 02 C5 at home that could have been written onto a simular policy but I added it to my regular home and car policy. The only restiction is that I drive it less then 8000 miles per year.Unfortunatley they would not write an agreed value policy on it and I understand because of the way the car depreceates but that car added to the policy increased the yearley premium only $802.00
Again I recomend only AGREED VALUE on collector cars and visit the value of the car yearly to make adjustments on its value The worst thing would be to have a policy and keep renuwing it year after year and in 5 years when you have a claim to find out the car is worth $20,000.00 more then it was 5 years ago (Wishfull thinking huh)

Re: Non-Technical Question: Insurance
I have Hagerty and have been happy with them for the last three or so years. For example, I lost an insurance card and was going to a chapter meet and needed the card. They emailed me my card immediately. I have not had any claims with them but, in discussions with them, I can't complain.

Re: Non-Technical Question: Insurance
Tim,
When I was insurance shopping last year, the best deal that I could find (by far) was ANPAC. They have a program called CHROME. Stands for Classic, Hot Rod, Replica, Originals, Modified, Exotic.
Rates were much less than the State Farm that I had previously. Don't know whether they insure in CA or not but you can check. Contact info. is 1-800-CAR BUFF.
Good luck,

Re: Non-Technical Question: Insurance
There are several companies out there that insure classic cars, Grundy, Hagerty, Sneed, Classic Automobile,to name a few. Use any search engine on the web and you will find more. Some have limited milage, trailer queens, others let you determine annual milage, due some research and find which one is best for your situation. Most will be cheaper than going through your regular insurance company. Most have quotes available online. I've had Hagerty for twenty five years, cars and boats, very good in my opinion. Had one claim and they were very prompt with their payment.

Re: Non-Technical Question: Insurance
Check the websites of the companies that Terry recommended. Most will give you an online quote and have a FAQ section. A couple of things to looks for:
1) Agreed value! Must have.
2) Are you going to park the car "unattended" or do an overnight cruise somewhere
3) Is it important for you to take it to a repair shop of your choosing.
Other than reliability of servicing claims, I can't think of anything else.- Top

Re: Non-Technical Question: Insurance
I've heard of Leland West. I think one of by buddies use them, but I can
comment on their service, coverage, or rates.
I'm with American Collectors. I was referred to them by my regular insurer- USAA for my "collector" cars.
I've not had to process a claim with them, but the coverage is thorough (no deductibles on collision and comp, agreed value (stated on policy), and the rates are very low.
As with most collector car policies, there are restictions. The car must be domiciled in a locked residential garage, cannot be used for yeoman commuting or errands, cannot be left unattended in public, and mileage is limited to 2500 per year.
If you have any kind of vintage car that you just use for pleasure driving, I think you are always better off insuring it with one of the many "collector car" insurance companies.

Re: Non-Technical Question: Insurance
Just as a follow up, I have found out that of the four I mentioned only Sneed does not have the "UNATTENDED" clause. It can not be your daily driver to and from work, but is covered a lot more than the others. I have my insured through Hagerty, but it looks like I'll be switching to Sneed. It seems most policies are for "Trailor Queens" only, when I called Grundy and Hagerty I was told if I left it unattended it was NOT covered. Guess your suppose to sleep with it if you take it overnight someplace! Anyone else know about other Classic Car policies.

Re: Non-Technical Question: Insurance
I used Farmer's to insure my 1966 T-Bird convertible that I once used as a daily driver. I am using Farmer's again to insure my 1964 Corvette coupe that I now use as a daily driver. Unlike most other insurance companies, Farmer's will write an "Agreed Value" policy with no restrictions. You will need to provide an appraisal document and pictures. An important point to remember is that the "agreed value" represents the MOST the insurance co. will pay, not necessarily WHAT the co. will pay.- Top

Hagerty !! YES!
I am extremely impressed with Hagerty's prices, services, and attitude. When it comes to my '63, I've never dealt with any insurance company that I felt knew how to properly handle classic cars, was giving me anything like a fair deal, and was actually fun to deal with. Check them out!! http://www.hagerty.com- Top

Unattended
Not what I was told by Hagerty. I specificly asked about driving the car from Texas to, say, Bloomington Gold. One night on the road in a motel parking lot and 4-5 night in the motel parking lot at the show and in the show parking lot. Was told no problem. Also was told that if I and the wife drove it out to dinner, there would not be a problem with leaving it in the parking lot unattended. Now if you were to drive it downtown and leave it all day in a public parking lot, then they may have an issue with that.

Re: Unattended
Tom
Sounds like one of us was told wrong, I just talked to them today, maybe I need to go up the food chain a little higher instead of the person who answers the phone. I also talked to my insurance agent and haven't got a answer yet. Also talked to Grundy today and they told me the same thing. Course Grundy tried to make it sound like all insurance companies have the " Unattended " clause in their policy. This I know is not true. Hate to find out the hard way though.
