    C1 Round Nose/Trunk Gold emblems

I noticed when I removed what appears to be the original emblems from the nose and trunk on my '58 the plastic center of the the emblem is much thicker than the silver GM or reproduction gold emblems. Are these originals? Did GM change the thickness from '58 to '61 and if so when? Assuming the thicker emblems are original does anyone make a reproduction of it? Are there point deducts in judging for using the thinner gold emblems vs the originals?

    TIA

    Ted,
I hope that this helps and you might need to cross-reference a parts book since mine are not on hand. I believe that the 62 uses the same emblem on the trunk that were used in 58. I have the my original that is very weathered and most of the gold in the emblem is faded out. It is quite thick. When I bought my car in 98, it came with a OEM emblem in the box. This one is just as thick but does not have the gold trim, just silver. Later I bid on one on e-bay. When it arrived, it was half the thickness of the original.

After some discussion, I found that the GM replacements were lacking the gold trim that the originals came with. Then as more time went by, these emblems were produced in a thinner version, still without the gold.

If you would like, e-mail the thickness of yours and I can check it with what I have in the shop.

I haven't looked for replacements lately. Hopefully someone else can give you tips on this one.
    Good Luck, Eric

I agree with Eric on this. I took the origionals out of my '59 in '71 and they are very thick as discribed. The GM replacements weren't gold so I didn't accept them when they came in. The origionals will probably go back in if I ever get around to painting the car. They're better than a bad repro in my way of thinking.

I am not sure if anyone is currently making the thick replacements with the gold details. If you can find a thick one, there was someone that was adding the gold detail for judging purposes. Unfortunately, if the car is in the sun much, it will fade again as the originals did.

Not sure about the thickness, but Trim Parts makes the gold emblems.

            Re: C1 sizes

            Ted.
This is what I found when I checked mine. I decided to run a post incase someone else had more to share.
The outside dimension is identicle between the original, old OEM part in box and the aftermarket replacement.

The difference is in the recessed center on the bottom. On both the original and OEM part, the recess is approx. .093" and on the aftermarket part it is approx. .350". Otherwise the flange thickness and overall height is very close.

One interesting thing is that as I looked closer, both the original and the OEM replacement appear to be from the same mold. Besides a few similar molding flaws, I found that one of the ejector pins to push the part from the mold has the same number 2 hand engraved on the top. So it seems like they just decided to drop the gold detail.

My version of the 61 - 62 judging manual states the gold finish should be located on the "vee" and on the "Chevrolet" & "Corvette" block letters. There is no mention of the thickness appearance of the part. However, when I have "Obsv. Judged", the visible difference was something that was talked about and looked at.

            Hope this helps. Happy Holidays!

              Re: C1 sizes

Thanks to all that have responded. I'm seeing the same measurements as you Eric. I bought a pair of the Trim Parts emblems for a '60 I had from CC, and they were thin in the center like the later GM silver emblems. I'm assuming no one out there is making a correct reproduction of these. Unfortunately the ones on the car are in too bad of shape (i.e. cracked and faded) and I'll bet finding original NOS Gold emblems are nearly impossible (aka big $$$). Has anyone taken a point hit for their emblems and if so how much?

              Thanks,

              Ted

Ted, I will make a few calls and see if someone is still doing this work.
