Greetings... I am the owner of an origional numbers matching 73 LS4 T-Top. I restored the engine in 1997 and at that time found out it had 4 bolt main caps. Both my mechanic and I have had LS4s and 5s before, and were under the impression that the only iron block 4 bolt 454 was the LS6. It is a 3999289 block cast in 11-72. According to Alan Colvin's book 'Chevrolet by the Numbers', on pg76 he states " several 3999289 4 bolt blocks have been found but seem to be an exception." He also identifies the correct oil line holes located above the oil filter boss on pgs69-70 that shows this was not just a re-drilled 2 bolt. What I am trying to find out is (1) has anyone come across this before, and (2) any idea of how many were produced. Colvin also states this block was used in Chevelles, El Caminos and Monte Carlos. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The Mortec site says, regarding the 3999289 block, that "some 'CE' replacement blocks had four bolt main caps".

Thanks for your response. I know that this block came in this car origionally... knew the other owner. The only thing that keeps coming up in other discussions is that they probably ran out of blocks in the plant at the time of order. Could that maybe fit in with what you found???
