    Survivor criteria?

what constutes "SURVIVOR STATUS?" Is it a unmolested virgin car? non-restored, low miles, original paint, what? The reason I ask is there are some sharp cars here in Ohio, some unrestored low miled. jc

    Re: Survivor criteria?

Survivor criteria, the term survivor as referenced when speaking of a Bloomington Gold function means that the car is judged to be at least 50% original in three of four catagorties. Those being interior, exterior, mechanical and chassis. That is all 50% in three of four catagories. A Benchmark car must attain the historic survivor category before being judged for the Gold. The historic survivor is 50% original in four of four catgories. If it then is judged gold it is considered a Benchmark. These are all Bloomington terms and not NCRS terms or awards.

        Re: Survivor criteria?

        Agreed.

IMHO, the Bloomington "Survivor" Award is much easier to obtain than various levels of the Bowtie award. Generally it is also much more expensive. The Bloomington judges have been told that if they can't make a decision on the car in 5 minutes, then they are taking too long. Thus, your $250 buys a 5 min judgement of your car.

Bowtie will give you a much more thorough appraisal of your car, and will award you "Stars" based on various elements of the car.

Chester, I, too, have seen and know of several Survivor quality cars, but few want to pay $250 for what they already know, that is that their car is original. I wish that the Bowtie process was more accessible, as it is only done at select Regional and National NCRS meets.

Re: Clarification on when/where Bowtie Judging

NCRS-Star & Bowtie Awards are earned only at National Conventions by unrestored cars successfully judged and voted to be historically and educationally significant in any one or more of four areas (Interior, Exterior, Mechanical, Chassis). The award is intended to recognize the car and encourage the owner to retain and display the car in its present condition for the enjoyment and continuing educational benefit of our membership. NCRS One-, Two- or Three-Star Awards are achieved by a successful judging and voting in any one or more of three out of the four listed areas. The NCRS-Chevrolet 4-Star Bowtie Award is achieved by a successful judging and voting in all four areas. Subsequent to this judging, the NCRS-Chevrolet 5-Star Bowtie Award may be achieved as described in item #12 of this section.

            2. MODEL YEARS INCLUDED These awards are available to any model year currently judged by NCRS which was manufactured 20 or more years ago.

            3. REGIONAL OR NATIONAL EVENT PREREQUISITE The following prerequisite MUST occur at the National Convention prior to the Convention it is to be Bowtie judged, or any regional meet in between. The sign-off card is only valid from one Convention to the next.

PRIOR TO APPLICATION for Star/Bowtie Judging at the National Convention, the candidate car, under the same ownership, must be entered at an NCRS National or Regional Event. This may be in the form of Display Only, Flight Judging, Performance Verification Judging or Founders Award Operations Judging. At the time of registering for the event, the owner must note on his registration that this car is a Bowtie Candidate and bring with them a 3” x 5” minimum size card, to be placed on the windshield with “Bowtie Candidate” written on it.

The owners must contact the appropriate Divisional National Team Leader and have them inspect the car, date and sign off on the Bowtie Candidate card. The purpose of this inspection is to assist in determining if the car would properly belong in the next National Convention Bowtie Judging category and exchange those views with the owner. The signed off and dated card must be sent with the judging application for the convention. OWNERS ARE CAUTIONED THAT NATIONAL TEAM LEADER AND JUDGES OPINIONS EXPRESSED DURING THIS CURSORY EXAMINATION CARRY WITH THEM NO GUARANTEE OF AN ACTUAL BOWTIE JUDGING RESULT.

Is it theoretically possible for a car to have been painstakenly restored "correctly", driven for 30K miles, well maintained, and then obtain a Bow tie or Duntov award? It seems to me that if a car would have gotten a Top Flight, but never judged, it would qualify and be difficult to tell it was once restored. Ron

Hello Ron, although I'm outside the judging circuit I'd say that a restored car is different to an original one, even after some use. There are a lot of details in finish, configuration and the like that shows a bit different. The most expert friends here in the board could detect it easily. Just a comment. Vinnie,

Thanks for the clarification. It still presents very little opportunity to recognize these fine cars, IMHO.

Big thanks to all, I just have that money burning in my pocket for another vette. And have seen some low miled cars around. Do the miles have any thing to do with it or just the ideaand facts that it is complete original. jc
