    58 Draglink and Pittman Arm

Just received a used draglink and pittman arm for my 58. I will be cleaning it up soon and inspecting the internals. What should I look for to determine if I need a rebuild kit. The exterior of the pieces look great(not beat up but a little rust) and the ball stud on the pittman looks fine too. My third arm ball stud is in perfect shape also. To me, the draglink suffers more scouring in the cap inner cylinder walls than the other parts. I don't want to buy a rebuild kit just because it is new stuff. Any critical things I need to understand here?

There is not much to them, just clean and grease it up and remember to connect the long end to the pitmen arm and short end to the third arm. . I just the tightness the end caps to remove all play and give it a haft turn or tell you aliign the cotter pin. The seals you can get as repro's.

I meant to ask if you replaced your Idler Arm Bracket. 58 has a forged number of #3742688 that is thicker then the 53 to 57. at the back area. 53 to 57 is about 5/8 thick where the 58 to 62 was about one inch. I see them mixed among years coursing the drag link to rub on the lower Radi. shielding.

Roy, I have the "688" bracket--thanks. Think the remainder of my front suspension setup is now correct. When I rescued her I found passenger stuff sprinkled front and rear. Have had suspension horn upper bushings replaced and hoping my wife is getting me front end rebuild kit for Christmas! And, I am giving ME a frame sandblasting for Christmas. I want toys not clothes--more toys! After four long years I am finally starting to put her together rather than taking apart and searching parts. Good feeling.

Bill, sounds like you and I are running an identicle time table. 4 years down and I just finished painting my frame and am working on the suspension too. If your Santa comes through for you, have them talk to mine! I like toys too!
          Happy Holidays! Eric

If you decide to rebuild the drag link, make sure the kit has ball seats with a hole in them so they'll take grease; I got one kit several years ago with all solid seats - no holes, no grease (it went back).

Roy and John, thanks for help. I am sure that putting her back together will generate more questions as I go? John, I have the chassis booklet you and Dale wrote--think I will follow it rather than worry about judging issues. Suspect I will put marks and stencils on and then paint over them--not trying to trick the next guy here. Just feel that is the "way she was at the factory".

And Eric, for one thing, you have to be good. I have been on my best behavior for the last couple of weeks. I cannot keep this up much longer. Happy Holidays!!
