    C3 Odometer inoperative

    Hello and Happy Holidays.

Q: Is it a common problem for C3 odometers/tripmeters to go inoperative whilst the speedometer works just fine?

Either way, what causes the odo/trip meter to malfunction and what can I do to repair? (Besides replacing!) It seems other speedos I look at have the same problem. I'm testing them with a VSR drill on reverse.

Thank you for any and all help.

    Tony,

Can you turn the the numbers back when you turn the reset knob? I have to pull down on the knob after I reset it or it won't register. I hope its an easy fix like that.

If the main odo is inop, the answer is a stripped gear, and it requires the attention of a good speedo shop. Been there.

I noticed a worm gear rises and drives the trip and odo dials. All gears from the worm out seem fine. Are you saying whatever is driving the worm gear is stripped?

I'd like to remove the speedo needle without breaking it. What is the best method of needle removal?

The dials and associated gears up to the main worm gear are alright. The reset knob, cable and gear are functional. The problem is with the gear(s) that drive the worm.

          Thank you.

When I removed my 70's speedometer indicator needle, just turned it counter-clock-wise while very gently lifting. Have done this twice with this method that I had read about elsewhere.

              Tony,

C-3's don't have as much trouble with the #1 gear stripping as the C-2's. The correct way to remove the needle is outlined above. Any speedometer shop can replace the #1, #2 and #3 gears and calibrate your speedometer in just a few minutes.

If you can't find one locally check out the driveline. There are several advertised in each publication.

              Regards,

              JR

                  Re: The "Driveline"

                  Tony,

The "Driveline" is published by the NCRS and is a bi-monthly publication filled with information about NCRS, parts for sale and cars for sale.

You should join the NCRS and take advantage of the world of information that is available to members.

There is over 25 years of articles and "how to's" in the "Restorer" alone. You can purchase all the back issues on CD and have a great library.

Try it, you'll like NCRS and the events scheduled each year.

                  Regards,

                  JR

                    Thank you JR.

I believe I will join NCRS this summer. (Allow me to recover from the winter.)

A friend showed me what goes wrong with speedos like mine. The main shaft has a worm gear connecting to a 90 degree worm connected to another 90 degree worm before it gets to the dials. I most likely have a stripped worm right off the main shaft. That worm is pressed into the housing with a race. As you mentioned . . .take it to a speedo repair shop! Thank you for your help.

                    Best regards
                    Tony
